Explore Romania

Romania is a country in southeastern Europe, located on the Black Sea. Its neighboring countries are Ukraine, Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria and Moldova. Here you can admire picturesque landscapes such as the Danube Delta, the largest preserved wetland in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or the distinctive mountain ranges of the Carpathians, which are considered to be one of the last wild natural landscapes in Europe. But the many villages and cities also make this country so diverse. Many peoples lived in the area of today’s Romania. But it was not until the end of the 19th century that an independent Romania was founded.

Why you should Travel to Romania

Romania is not a country you can simply “tick off.” It’s a country that changes you. A country that shows you that Europe still holds secrets.

If you think you already know Europe, Romania will surprise you. It’s one of those destinations that you arrive in and immediately think: Why didn’t I come here sooner?

The country combines historic cities like Brașov, Sibiu, Sighișoara or Cluj-Napoca with nature that still seems completely untouched. Between colorful old towns, medieval towers and cozy alleyways, you’ll experience the perfect blend of modernity and the past. The Carpathian Mountains offer tranquil forests, endless vistas and places where you feel like the world belongs to you for a moment. In traditional villages, you’ll meet people who still live to a rhythm that has almost been lost, authentic, honest and completely unpretentious. Highlights like the legendary Transfăgărășan Highway or the peaceful Danube Delta make Romania a destination for true explorers, for travelers who collect not just photos, but emotions.

How to get to Romania

Getting to Romania is easier than you might expect, especially if you’re traveling within Europe. Most visitors arrive by plane, with major airports in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, and Timișoara offering a growing number of international connections.

If you’re coming from nearby countries, traveling by car or train is also a great option. The routes take you through beautiful landscapes and give you the flexibility to explore different regions along the way. It might take a bit longer, but the journey itself becomes part of the experience.

Romania Travel Tips

  • Take some cash with you – cards are accepted in cities, but in the countryside, in guesthouses, markets or small shops: mostly only cash (RON).
  • Roads take longer than expected – 100 km in Romania often takes 2 hours or more. Plan accordingly.
  • Drive slowly at night and in the dark – animals, horse-drawn carriages or unlit cars can appear on country roads. Surprises included.
  • Language – Learn a few basics, it can open doors. “Bună” (Hello), “Mulțumesc” (Thank you), “Sănătate” (Cheers), Bye “Ciao” or “Pa”. Romanians genuinely appreciate it and you’ll find yourself drawn into conversations much more quickly, especially in rural areas.
  • Nature means nature – take bear areas seriously and most importantly, don’t feed them! Avoid dogs herding sheep. You should always carry water; Romania is wild, beautiful and unfiltered.
  • Don’t expect perfection – expect heart. Not everything is perfect – roads, bureaucracy, routes, opening hours. Stay easy!
  • For vegetarians – the cuisine here is very meat-heavy. Always say “fără carne” – otherwise it will come with meat anyway.
  • Parking in cities – often via app. It’s best to check beforehand (e.g., “TPark”). Illegally parked vehicles are quickly towed or fined.
