Nestled in the heart of Transylvania and surrounded by the dramatic Carpathian Mountains, the city blends colorful old-town charm, hidden alleyways, cozy cafés, and breathtaking viewpoints into one unforgettable destination. From sunrise walks through the medieval center to panoramic views from Tâmpa Mountain, Brașov surprised us at every corner.

Brașov is located in the heart of Romania, surrounded by the stunning Carpathian Mountains in the historic region of Transylvania. Known for its colorful old town, medieval architecture, and dramatic mountain scenery, Brașov is one of the most beautiful and visited cities in the country.
The city lies about 2.5 hours north of Bucharest and is perfectly positioned for exploring castles, forests, and some of Romania’s most iconic landscapes. Whether you are visiting for a weekend getaway or a longer Transylvania road trip, Brașov is the perfect base for adventure and culture alike.
Brașov is surprisingly easy to reach, even though it sits in the heart of the Carpathian Mountains. Most travelers arrive via Bucharest, Romania’s capital, and continue their journey north into Transylvania. Whether you prefer flying, scenic train rides, budget-friendly buses, or a road trip through the mountains, getting to Brașov is part of the adventure.
Brașov now has its own airport: Brașov-Ghimbav International Airport (GHV), located just about 12 km from the city. It’s a modern and newly built airport offering a growing number of European connections.
However, most international travelers still fly into Bucharest Henri Coandă Airport (OTP), which has the widest selection of flights. From Bucharest, you can easily continue your journey to Brașov by train, bus, or car.
The train from Bucharest to Brașov is one of the most scenic routes in Romania. The journey takes around 2.5 to 3.5 hours and passes through rolling hills, forests, and mountain landscapes. Trains run frequently throughout the day and arrive directly in Brașov’s central station, close to the Old Town.

Buses are a budget-friendly and reliable option. The trip from Bucharest to Brașov usually takes around 3 to 4 hours, depending on traffic. While slightly less comfortable than the train, buses often offer flexible departure times and competitive prices.

Driving to Brașov is ideal if you want flexibility and the freedom to explore Transylvania along the way. The drive from Bucharest takes about 2.5 to 3 hours via the A3 motorway or DN1 route. This option also lets you stop at castles, mountain viewpoints, and charming villages en route.
Arriving by Car in Brașov!?
Once you get closer to Brașov, the landscape becomes more mountainous and the views start to feel like a real introduction to the Carpathians.
🅿️ Parking in Brașov is available but regulated, especially around the Old Town. You’ll find paid street parking zones, public parking areas just outside the historic center, and hotel parking options. The most convenient approach is to park outside the pedestrian zone and continue exploring on foot, since the Old Town is compact and walkable.
👉 Traffic in Brașov is usually moderate, but it can become busy during weekends, holidays, and peak travel seasons. The main congestion points are around Council Square (Piața Sfatului) and the roads leading into the city center. Rush hours in the morning and late afternoon can also slow things down a bit, but overall Brașov is still much easier to navigate than larger European cities.
Just a few steps away stands the iconic Black Church (Biserica Neagră), one of the largest Gothic churches in Eastern Europe. Its darkened walls, massive structure, and impressive organ make it one of Brașov’s most important landmarks. Inside, you’ll find quiet halls, historical details, and a strong sense of the city’s Saxon heritage.

For the best views over the city, take the cable car up Tâmpa Mountain. In just a few minutes, Brașov transforms into a full panoramic scene below you. At the top, you’ll find walking paths, viewpoints, and the famous Brașov sign overlooking the Old Town.

Strada Sforii is one of the narrowest streets in Europe and a fun hidden gem in Brașov. It’s quick to walk through, but it feels like stepping into a secret passage between old buildings, a perfect photo stop and a quirky piece of city history.
The heart of Brașov is Council Square, a wide cobblestone plaza framed by pastel-colored merchant houses. This is where the city’s history, daily life, and tourism all meet. Cafés spill onto the square, street musicians often play in the background, and the atmosphere changes beautifully from day to night.
