Best Time to Visit the Mocănița Maramureș

When should you ride the Mocănița Maramureș for the ultimate experience?
This historic steam train winds through one of Romania’s most breathtaking landscapes – dense forests, mountain rivers and untouched valleys that change dramatically with each season. But when is the perfect time to ride the Mocănița? We visited in mid-July, so peak season in summer and it was just awesome. Sharing with you our experience.

Spring (April - June)

Spring is a wonderful time to ride the Mocănița Maramureș. The Vaser Valley awakens with fresh greenery, blooming flowers and flowing rivers. Temperatures are mild, making it perfect for exploring the surrounding forests or taking photos from the train. Spring also sees fewer tourists.

Summer (July - August)

We visited the Mocănița Maramureș in mid-July and it was simply great! The weather was warm, the forests were lush and green and the rivers sparkled in the summer sun. The long daylight hours gave us plenty of time to enjoy every scenic view along the Vaser Valley. It’s kind of a busy season, so booking tickets in advance is recommended.

Autumn (September - October)

Autumn is arguably the most magical season for the Mocănița. The forests turn into a kaleidoscope of red, orange and gold, creating breathtaking views along the Vaser Valley. The weather is still pleasant and there are fewer visitors than in summer. This season is ideal for photographers, nature lovers and anyone wanting to experience Romania’s countryside at its most colorful.

Winter (November - March)

Winter is a completely different experience. Snow blankets the valley, creating a postcard-perfect winter wonderland. While train services are less frequent, the quiet and magical atmosphere makes it worth the visit. It’s perfect for travelers seeking tranquility, snowy landscapes and a cozy, nostalgic journey aboard the historic steam train. It could get cold, so dress warmly.

What Should You Pack for the Ride?

Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing

The weather in the Carpathians is often changeable, especially in spring and autumn. Even in summer, it can get chilly in the forest valley. A light jacket, comfortable shoes, and a sweater in the cooler months are recommended.

Snacks and drinks

There are often stops along the way with small snack options, but it’s a good idea to bring water and some snacks. Alternatively, you can buy something at the Viseu de Sus train station.

Camera or Smartphone

The scenery along the Vaser Route is spectacular: forests, mountains, rivers and sometimes some animals. Make sure you bring a fully charged camera or smartphone.

Cash

In remote regions of Romania, especially at tourist rest stops, cash is often the only form of payment accepted. Trains usually make one or more stops where there’s a small stand selling snacks and drinks. While card payments might be accepted, you should still carry some cash.

Alternatively, sun protection, a small blanket or seat cushion

Even though the route is often shaded, sunscreen, sunglasses, or a hat are useful in summer. Also, the wooden benches in the historic carriages can be hard and cold. A small cushion makes the journey much more comfortable.

Good mood

The Mocănița travels slowly – very, very slowly. But that’s precisely what makes it so charming. The journey isn’t just a means of transport, but an experience that takes you back in time. So just bring a good mood and patience. Enjoy the ride and the scenery!
