Best time to visit

Depending on your destination and chosen region, spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) are generally the best months for a road trip through the USA. Temperatures are pleasant, most regions are easily accessible and tourist crowds are manageable.

  • Spring (April to June):
This is one of the best times to travel to the USA. The weather is mild, nature is green and in bloom. Also the tourist hotspots are not as crowded as in summer.
  • Autumn (September to October):
Autumn is also an excellent time to visit. Temperatures are pleasant, the summer heat subsides and in many regions you can enjoy the colorful autumn landscapes, such as the “Indian Summer” in the Northeast.
  • Summer (July to August):
Many regions, especially inland and the Southwest, can get very hot. Coastal cities and northern regions are generally pleasant to visit. Summer is the peak season, so expect more tourists and higher prices.
  • Winter (December to February):
In the southern states and Florida, the weather is mild and pleasant, while in the north and in the mountains it can be very cold and snowy. Ideal for winter sports or sunny escape destinations in the south.

How to get around

In the US, the best way to get from A to B depends heavily on the route, region and type of travel you’re planning. Here’s a general overview of the main options:

  • ✈️ Airplane – for long distances
Best for routes over 500 km or across the country (e.g., New York → Los Angeles). The advantages are usually speed, often low cost if booked in advance, and a wide range of domestic flights.

    Tips:
    Low-cost carriers: Southwest, Spirit, JetBlue
Consider airport transfers – many airports are located outside the city.

  • 🚗 Car / Rental Car – very flexible

Perfect for national parks, rural areas, or road trips. Maximum freedom, stop whenever you like, even remote locations are accessible.
    Tips:
US highways are well-developed, gas stations are everywhere. Book your rental car early, check the insurance.

  • 🚌 Bus – cheap, but slow
Best for city-to-city travel without a car, budget travel. Good providers are Greyhound or Megabus.

    Advantages: Very cheap, easy booking
Disadvantages: Longer travel time and limited routes

  • 🚆 Train – comfortable, but limited
Best used if you’re traveling the East Coast (Boston – New York – Washington D.C.). The provider here is Amtrak.

    Advantages: Comfortable, stress-free, beautiful views
Disadvantages: Slower and more expensive than bus or plane for long distances, limited network
