Travel Gear

Camera Equipment that we use and essential things you need for your travels?

A common question we ask ourselves when traveling is: What equipment do I need and what should be in my camera backpack? Of course, a lot depends on your own preferences and tastes. That’s why we’ve put together a short list of our travel gear and equipment that we use and absolutely love on our travels.

Camera & Lenses

We’ve been using the Sony A7 IV for a long time. It’s a versatile camera equipped with a 33-megapixel full-frame sensor. It offers outstanding image quality, fast performance, extensive video capabilities, and a wide selection of lenses. It’s easy to handle without being too bulky and is ideal for travel photography, portraits, or professional projects. Whether on city breaks, outdoor adventures, or creative shoots at home, the Sony A7 IV is the perfect companion for us on every trip.

The Sony FE 16–35mm F2.8 GM is a professional wide-angle zoom lens that combines exceptional image quality with flexibility. We’ve been using it for quite some time now and it’s one of our favorites. It’s perfect for landscapes, architecture, and interior photography. The lens is also ideal for creative perspectives in videography, especially for vlogs.

One of our first lenses is the FE 24–240mm F3.5–6.3 OSS, a true all-rounder. With its enormous focal length range of 24 to 240 mm, it covers almost everything. Whether landscapes, portraits, or telephoto scenes, this lens can handle it all. This makes it a great travel lens if you don’t want to constantly change lenses.

Our newest lens is the FE 70–200mm F2.8 GM OSS, an absolute powerhouse. With its excellent G Master optics and fast, precise autofocus, it delivers impressively sharp and high-contrast images. It’s also very well-suited for professional video projects. Furthermore, it’s extremely robust, weather-sealed, and consistently reliable. The lens impresses with its exceptional detail, creamy bokeh, and precise performance in both still and video photography.

Drone

The DJI Mini 3 has been accompanying us on our travels for quite some time now. Before that, we had its predecessor, the DJI Mini 2, and were completely satisfied with it as well. The DJI Mini 3 offers a very good balance of portability, image/video quality, and features, especially for beginners and content creators. However, if you’re planning on producing professional films, you should consider the higher-end models.

Here are a few reasons why the DJI Mini 3 is the perfect travel companion↓

  • Very light: Only about 248g starting weight
  • Excellent image and video quality
  • Compact and easy to transport
  • Portrait function
  • Robust wind and flight conditions
  • Good connection and range
  • Easy to use
  • Good value for money

Action & Pocket Cams

GoPro Hero 10 & DJI Osmo Pocket 3

These two cameras are small, handy, and perfect for on the go – but they have different strengths that complement each other perfectly.

We’ve had the GoPro Hero 10 for a while now. It’s the perfect companion when things get action-packed. Whether for sports, in the water, or just traveling, it’s robust, waterproof, and delivers excellent footage with impressive stabilization. There are now several newer GoPro models, but the GoPro Hero 10 is still sufficient for our needs.

The DJI Osmo Pocket 3, on the other hand, is something we primarily use for filming or vlogs. Thanks to its integrated gimbal, clips remain incredibly stable, even when moving. It’s also very small, handy, and lightweight, so it fits in any bag. It’s perfect for spontaneous shots and travel.

In short: The GoPro is perfect for action and adventure, while the Osmo Pocket 3 is better suited for vlogs and more tranquil scenes when traveling. Together, they’re an unbeatable duo – handy, versatile, and always ready to go.

Laptops

MacBook Pro & MacBook Air

We could write a detailed text here about its performance, specs, and capabilities, but that would probably be quite tedious. We use both a MacBook Pro and a MacBook Air. We’re extremely happy with both! Choosing the right laptop is often difficult and you should always consider your intended use beforehand. Think carefully about what you’ll primarily use the device for. Is it just office work, browsing, streaming, image/video editing, programming, creative work or is portability simply important to you? Furthermore, you should consider the processor, RAM and storage, which are often crucial for image and video editing. Display, size, portability, as well as ports and expandability are other important factors when buying a laptop. And of course, there’s the price. It’s important to note that Apple products are relatively expensive, but in our opinion, a MacBook is definitely worth it.

Other Travel Equipment

The DJI RDS 3 Mini is a must-have for any trip. Especially if you enjoy vlogging and want stable, high-quality footage while staying compact, and you have high technical demands, then the DJI RDS 3 Mini is an excellent choice. The gimbal weighs only around 795g in portrait mode and approximately 850g in landscape mode, and boasts a high payload capacity. It also has a good battery life. In short, it’s easily transportable and compact – perfect for travel, vlogging, or spontaneous shooting.

Whether for YouTube videos, podcasts, interviews, vlogs, social media, etc., the DJIMic is perfect for creators, vloggers, and mobile video producers. It’s a wireless microphone system that comes with two transmitters and one receiver. It’s compact, easy to use, and delivers clear results, all without cable clutter.

If you take lots of photos and videos on your travels, you’ll need somewhere to store them. Especially if you work with large amounts of data or simply want to securely save your projects, the LaCie Rugged is practically indispensable. It’s available in sizes from 1TB to 8TB.

A tripod is always essential for stable, shake-free shots. We opted for the Rollei tripod and are completely satisfied; it’s been a faithful companion. Whether filming, photographing, or creating social media content, the Rollei tripod is a reliable, versatile tripod and perfect for any trip.

With the RØDE VideoMic Pro, you can produce high-quality videos with truly excellent sound. The microphone delivers crystal-clear, detailed audio while simultaneously reducing distracting background noise. Its compact design and ease of use make it ideal for anyone looking to take their video productions to the next level. Simply attach the RØDE VideoMic Pro to your camera, and it’s ready to use.

For some of our photos, videos, and social media content, we use, among other things, the Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max (512 GB). Its very impressive camera quality, strong low-light performance, and generous storage capacity make it the perfect travel companion.
