Where is Sibiu?

Sibiu is located in the heart of Romania, in the historic region of Transylvania, surrounded by the stunning Southern Carpathian Mountains. It sits roughly in the center of the country, making it an easy stop on a wider Romania road trip between cities like Brașov, Cluj-Napoca, and Bucharest.

Once one of the most important Saxon settlements in Transylvania, Sibiu today feels like a perfectly preserved medieval town with a modern, creative edge. Its Old Town is divided into the Upper Town and Lower Town, both filled with cobblestone streets, pastel-colored houses, and iconic rooftops with “watchful eyes” that have become the city’s signature detail.

How to get to Sibiu?

Getting to Sibiu is surprisingly easy, especially considering how fairytale-like the city feels once you arrive. Thanks to its central location in Romania, you can reach Sibiu by plane, train, bus, or car from most major cities in the country and beyond. Whether you’re planning a quick city break or a longer Transylvania road trip, Sibiu is well connected yet still feels wonderfully off the beaten path.

Sibiu has its own international airport (Sibiu International Airport), located just a short drive from the Old Town. It offers direct and seasonal connections to several European cities. From the airport, it’s only about 10-15 minutes to the city center by taxi or rideshare.

Train travel in Romania is operated mainly by CFR Călători, the national railway company. Sibiu is connected with cities like Bucharest, Brașov, and Cluj-Napoca. The journeys are scenic, passing through mountains and rural Transylvania, although travel times can be longer than by bus.

Buses are often the fastest and most flexible way to reach Sibiu. The most popular operator is FlixBus, offering affordable and comfortable routes across Romania and Europe.

In addition, local and regional connections are widely available through platforms like Autogari.ro, which aggregates multiple Romanian bus companies and timetables. Many regional carriers operate routes to Sibiu from cities such as Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Brașov, and Sighișoara.

Driving to Sibiu is one of the best ways to explore Transylvania at your own pace. The roads are generally in good condition, and the scenery is stunning, especially when crossing mountain passes.

Arriving by car in Sibiu!?
Once you arrive in Sibiu, you’ll notice that the Old Town is mostly pedestrian-friendly. Cars are restricted in many central areas, especially around the historic squares. There are several public parking areas and underground garages located just outside the Old Town, which are the best option if you’re staying in the center.

🅿️ Parking is usually paid, but affordable, and it’s worth parking outside the core historic area and exploring the city on foot.

🚦 Traffic in Sibiu is generally manageable, but during weekends and peak season it can get a bit busier around the main entrances to the Old Town.

The best experience really comes from leaving the car behind and wandering through Sibiu’s cobblestone streets, where every turn feels like stepping deeper into history.
