a slow love affair with cluj-napoca’s unexpected soul
Located in the heart of Transylvania in northwestern Romania, Cluj-Napoca is one of the country’s most vibrant and underrated cities. Surrounded by rolling hills and a mix of historic architecture, creative cafés, and lively student energy, Cluj feels both deeply rooted in history and refreshingly modern at the same time.
Often called the unofficial capital of Transylvania, Cluj-Napoca sits about 450 kilometers north of Bucharest and is well connected by flights, trains, and buses to other major Romanian cities and European destinations. Thanks to its international airport, the city has become a popular gateway for travelers exploring Romania beyond the classic tourist route.
Getting to Cluj-Napoca is surprisingly easy, whether you’re planning a Romania road trip, traveling through Transylvania, or arriving from another European city. Thanks to its international airport and strong train and bus connections, Cluj has become one of the best-connected cities in Romania.
Cluj International Airport offers direct flights from many European cities, making Cluj-Napoca an easy weekend getaway or starting point for exploring Transylvania. The airport is located around 15-20 minutes from the city center by taxi or rideshare.
Traveling to Cluj-Napoca by train is one of the most scenic ways to explore Romania, especially through the landscapes of Transylvania. Romania’s national railway company CFR Călători operates connections from cities like Bucharest, Brașov, Sibiu, and Timișoara. Private operators such as InterRegional Călători and Transferoviar Călători also serve routes connected to Cluj-Napoca.
Long-distance buses are often affordable and surprisingly comfortable in Romania. Companies like FlixBus and regional Romanian operators connect Cluj-Napoca with cities across Romania and neighboring countries. Bus travel can sometimes even be faster than trains on certain routes.
Driving to Cluj-Napoca gives you the most flexibility, especially if you’re planning to explore Transylvania, small villages, or nearby nature spots along the way. Roads around the city are generally good, and having a car makes day trips much easier.
Arriving by Car in Cluj-Napoca!?
Arriving in Cluj-Napoca by car can feel a little hectic at first, especially during rush hour, but it’s still one of the best ways to explore the region at your own pace. The city itself is lively and fast-moving, with a mix of historic streets, modern traffic, and busy intersections.
🅿️ Parking
Parking in the city center can sometimes be limited, especially near Union Square and the old town. We’d recommend booking accommodation with private parking if possible, as it makes exploring Cluj much more relaxed. There are also public parking garages and paid street parking throughout the city.
🚦Traffic
Traffic in Cluj-Napoca can become quite busy during morning and evening hours due to the large student population and growing city traffic. Outside peak hours though, driving is manageable, and once you leave the center, exploring Transylvania by car becomes incredibly scenic and enjoyable.
Cluj-Napoca is one of those cities where you don’t really need a strict plan, you just start walking and things unfold naturally. It’s a mix of historic architecture, student life, creative cafés, and quiet corners that make you slow down without even noticing.
The heart of the city is Union Square, home to St. Michael’s Church. The gothic architecture dominates the square, and it’s especially beautiful early in the morning or at sunset when the light hits the façades.
The historic center is also the best starting point for any visit. Everything radiates out from here, cafés, streets, and landmarks.
A short walk away, you’ll find the impressive Cluj-Napoca National Theatre and the wide, elegant Avram Iancu Square. This area feels more spacious and grand, surrounded by important buildings like the Orthodox Cathedral and historic institutions that reflect Cluj’s cultural identity.
One of the best things to do in Cluj is simply getting lost in the streets. Pastel-colored buildings, quiet alleys, and unexpected courtyards give the city a soft charm. Every turn feels like a small discovery, especially in the early morning when everything is still calm.
