The approximately 46-kilometer-long Slovenian Riviera is home to the three picturesque coastal towns of Izola, Koper and Piran, which lie on the Adriatic Sea and are known for their rich history, charming old towns and Mediterranean atmosphere. The region, which is characterized by Venetian and Italian architecture and lifestyle, attracts visitors with its idyllic green hinterland, picturesque little towns and natural attractions, such as the beautiful Dragonja Valley. To the north is the Italian city of Trieste and to the south is the Croatian Riviera of Umag.

All three towns share the Mediterranean atmosphere with narrow streets, historic buildings and beautiful views of the Adriatic Sea. They are a wonderful destination for travelers looking for both culture and relaxation. The coastal region of Slovenia is relatively small, but the towns of Izola, Koper and Piran offer a great mix of history, culture, gastronomy and beautiful nature. Definitely places that should not be missed on your trip to Slovenia.

Izola

The small, cute town of Izola has around 12,000 inhabitants and was originally known as a fishing village. Today, Izola is a popular destination for tourists seeking a peaceful atmosphere and an authentic Mediterranean lifestyle. The old town of Izola is located on the former island from which the town’s name derives and is characterized by narrow streets, a pretty promenade and the harbor. The surrounding beaches, nature and proximity to other coastal towns make Izola an ideal starting point for excursions along the Slovenian coast.

Koper

With around 26,000 inhabitants, Koper is the largest town on the Slovenian Riviera. Numerous Venetian-style buildings and typical narrow streets reflect the rich culture and Italian influence. The old town of Koper is particularly charming and worth seeing. Koper is also a center for business and trade, but despite its importance, the city has retained its historical charm. The Muda Tower and the Koper Cathedral are other important sights.

Piran

Piran is a unique and charming town with around 4,000 inhabitants and is located in the extreme southwest of the country on a peninsula on the Adriatic Sea. It is considered one of the most beautiful towns on the Slovenian coast. With its well-preserved medieval architecture and the Venetian influence that can be found in many of the buildings, it is a wonderful place to visit. The center of the town is Tartini Square, which is located right by the harbor and is surrounded by good café’s and restaurants. Piran also has a long tradition as an artists’ town and a special place is St. George’s Church, which is located on a hill and offers a wonderful view of the town and the sea.

In general, there are many good accommodation options in the Slovenian Riviera region. Whether you want to stay in a luxurious hotel, a cozy bed and breakfast or a private holiday apartment, the Slovenian coast has something to offer for every taste.

How to get Around

The car is one of the most convenient and flexible ways to travel along the Slovenian Adriatic coast. But the coastal towns are also well connected by public transport, and there are regular bus connections between the coastal towns. There are no trains along the coast, only back inland. Another good way to explore the Riviera is by bike or on foot.
