Discover the best things to do in Bled, from its iconic lake
and island church to the medieval castle and beautiful viewpoints.
Nestled in the heart of the Julian Alps, Bled is one of Slovenia’s most picturesque destinations, located in the country’s northwestern region. The charming lakeside town sits just 55 km (34 miles) from Ljubljana and around 35 km (22 miles) from Ljubljana Airport, making it an easy destination for both weekend getaways and longer road trips through Slovenia.
Despite its peaceful alpine setting, Bled is incredibly accessible and serves as the perfect base for exploring nearby highlights like Vintgar Gorge, Lake Bohinj, and Triglav National Park. Whether you’re visiting for the iconic lake views, scenic hikes, or hidden gems, Bled is one of those places that feels worlds away while being surprisingly easy to reach.
Getting to Bled is easier than you might think. Whether you’re arriving by plane, train, bus, or car, the picturesque lakeside town is well connected and makes a perfect stop on any Slovenia itinerary. Here are the best ways to reach Bled.
The closest airport is Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport, located around 35 km (22 miles) from Bled. From there, you can rent a car, book a shuttle, or take a bus to reach the lake in about 30-40 minutes. If you’re traveling from neighboring countries, airports in Klagenfurt (Austria), Trieste (Italy), or Zagreb (Croatia) are also good alternatives.
Bled has two train stations: Lesce-Bled and Bled Jezero. Most international and domestic trains stop at Lesce-Bled, which is about a 10-minute drive or bus ride from the town center. Bled Jezero offers a more scenic arrival and is within walking distance of the lake but is served by fewer trains.
The main provider of train services in Slovenia is the state-owned railway company Slovenske železnice (SŽ).
Regular buses connect Ljubljana with Bled throughout the day, with the journey taking around 1 hour and 15 minutes. Bus travel is affordable, reliable, and a great option if you don’t plan on renting a car.
Driving is one of the easiest and most flexible ways to visit Bled, especially if you’re planning to explore nearby places like Vintgar Gorge, Lake Bohinj, or Triglav National Park. The drive from Ljubljana takes around 45 minutes, while destinations such as Salzburg, Venice, or Zagreb are all within a few hours.
Arriving by Car in Bled!?
Having a car gives you the freedom to explore the surrounding alpine region at your own pace. Roads are well maintained, and reaching Bled is straightforward from anywhere in Slovenia or the neighboring countries.
🅿️ Parking
Parking in Bled is paid in most central areas, especially during the summer months. You’ll find several public parking lots around the lake, but they can fill up quickly on weekends and during peak season. If you’re staying overnight, check whether your accommodation offers free parking, many hotels and guesthouses do.
🚦 Traffic
Bled is one of Slovenia’s most popular destinations, so expect heavier traffic during summer weekends, public holidays, and around sunrise or sunset when visitors head to the famous viewpoints. Arriving early in the morning or later in the afternoon usually makes for a much smoother experience.
If there’s one thing you absolutely shouldn’t skip in Bled, it’s walking around Lake Bled. It might sound simple, but trust us, this is where you’ll get the postcard views everyone talks about. The path circles the lake for about 6 km (3.7 miles), passing hidden viewpoints, cozy cafés, swimming spots, and endless photo opportunities.
We lost count of how many times we stopped to admire the scenery. Sometimes the simplest activities turn out to be the best ones and this is definitely one of them.
If there’s one place that defines Lake Bled, it’s Bled Island. Sitting right in the middle of the emerald-green lake, it’s the postcard view that has made Bled famous around the world and yes, it’s every bit as beautiful in real life.
👉 There are several ways to reach the island:
Once you arrive, you’ll need to climb the famous 99 stone steps leading to the Church of the Assumption. Legend says that ringing the church bell while making a wish will bring you good luck. Whether you believe it or not, it’s a tradition that’s hard to resist.
💡 Don’t miss:
Our Tip: If your budget allows, take a traditional pletna boat one way and rent a rowboat for the return trip. It’s the perfect mix of experiencing Bled’s history while enjoying the freedom to explore the lake at your own pace.
Perched high on a cliff overlooking Lake Bled, Bled Castle is impossible to miss and the views alone make the climb worth it. As the oldest castle in Slovenia, it’s one of the top attractions in Bled and a must-visit for first-time visitors.
👉 Inside, you’ll find much more than just castle walls:
The walk up to the castle is fairly short but quite steep. If you’d rather save your energy, there’s also a parking area close to the entrance which costs around 3€.
Our Tip: Visit in the late afternoon or right in the morning when the crowds begin to thin out and the golden light makes the views over Lake Bled even more spectacular. Don’t forget your camera, this is one of the best photo spots in all of Slovenia.
💡 Good to know: Entrance tickets cost around €19 for adults, while children under six can enter for free. The castle is generally open daily from 8:00 AM. Closing time is 8:00 PM.
If you’re willing to wake up early, Ojstrica Viewpoint rewards you with one of the most breathtaking sunrises in Slovenia. As the first rays of light hit Lake Bled, the island, castle, and surrounding mountains slowly light up, creating the famous postcard view you’ve probably seen all over Instagram.
The hike is short but steep, taking around 20-30 minutes from the lakeshore. Wear sturdy shoes, especially if you’re hiking before sunrise, as parts of the trail can be rocky and slippery.
👉 Why it’s worth the early alarm:
💡 Good to know:
There’s actually more than just Ojstrica if you’re up for a bit more hiking. About 45 minutes further up the trail, you’ll reach Velika Osojnica, which offers an even higher and quieter viewpoint over Lake Bled. It’s less crowded and perfect if you want that iconic view without the people in your photos.
On the way up, you’ll also pass a few nice little surprises:
There are few better ways to start a day in Bled than jumping straight into the crystal-clear waters of Lake Bled. Early in the morning, before the boats and crowds arrive, the lake feels calm, quiet, and almost unreal, like you’ve got the whole place to yourself.
The water is fresh (yes, it’s cold at first), but incredibly refreshing, especially on a warm summer morning. With the sun rising over the Julian Alps and the castle reflecting in the water, it quickly becomes one of those “this is why we travel” moments.
Just a short drive from Lake Bled, Vintgar Gorge feels like stepping into a completely different world. Instead of open lake views, you’re suddenly surrounded by dramatic cliffs, rushing turquoise water, and wooden walkways that lead you right through the heart of the canyon.
The gorge is about 1.6 km one way, and you’ll follow a series of wooden paths and bridges that hug the river the entire time. It’s an easy walk, but the constant sound of flowing water and the tight rock walls make it feel surprisingly adventurous.
👉 What you’ll see along the way:
💡 Good to know:
If there’s one thing you absolutely have to try in Bled, it’s the legendary Bled Cream Cake (Kremšnita). It looks simple at first glance, but one bite explains why it became the town’s signature dessert. Flaky puff pastry, a thick layer of vanilla cream, and a light dusting of powdered sugar, it’s messy, sweet, and quite pricy.
While you’ll find it on almost every menu around the lake, the most famous place to try it is Café Park (Kavarna Park), right by the waterfront. This is actually where the original version is said to come from, and there’s something special about eating it just a few steps from Lake Bled itself. Sitting there with a slice of kremšnita and a coffee while watching the lake activity is one of those classic Bled moments you don’t really want to rush.
One of the most iconic things you can do in Bled is renting a small rowboat and heading out onto Lake Bled yourself. It sounds simple, but being out on the water, surrounded by mountains, with the island in front of you and Bled Castle above is something you won’t forget anytime soon.
Unlike the traditional pletna boats, rowing yourself gives you total freedom. You can stop wherever you want, take your time, and enjoy the lake at your own pace. It’s a bit of effort, especially if there’s wind, but that’s part of the fun.
👉 Good to know:
If you’re looking for a special dinner in Bled, The Oldest Bled Cellar is one of those places that feels like more than just a restaurant. Hidden in a beautifully restored 18th-century farmhouse, it combines rustic charm with modern Slovenian cuisine and it’s the perfect spot to end a day by the lake.
The atmosphere is cozy and a bit romantic, with stone walls, wooden details, and a warm, intimate vibe that makes you want to slow down and stay longer than planned. The menu focuses on modern Slovenian dishes with local ingredients, often served in smaller “tapas-style” portions, so you can try a bit of everything.
If you’re looking for a bit of fun (and a small adrenaline kick) in Bled, the Straža Bled toboggan run is exactly that. It’s one of those activities that looks a bit silly at first, but ends up being way more fun than expected.
You take a chairlift up the hill and then ride a small sled down a winding track with views over Lake Bled, Bled Castle, and the surrounding mountains. It’s fast enough to make you smile the whole way down, but still relaxed enough that anyone can do it.
👉 What to expect:
Right at the edge of Bled town, you’ll find St. Martin’s Church, a quiet, beautiful spot that most people completely overlook while rushing between the lake and the castle. It’s not as flashy as Bled Island or the viewpoints, but that’s exactly what makes it worth a stop.
From the lakeside promenade, it’s just a short walk inland. If you’re already doing the walk up to Bled Castle, you’ll actually pass right by it on the way up or down, so it fits perfectly into your route without any extra effort.
The church itself is a simple but elegant neo-Gothic building, surrounded by mountains and framed by that typical Bled scenery that somehow makes everything look cinematic.

Finding the right place to stay can completely change your experience in Bled. During our trip, we stayed in two very different accommodations, and honestly, we loved both for different reasons. Whether you’re looking for a unique stay surrounded by nature or a cozy boutique hotel close to the lake, these are the places we would genuinely recommend.
If you’ve ever dreamed of sleeping in a treehouse, this is your chance. Garden Village Bled is unlike any hotel we’ve stayed at before. Hidden among trees and streams just a short walk from Lake Bled, it feels more like a peaceful nature retreat than a traditional resort.
We stayed in both the Treehouse and the Glamping Tent, and waking up surrounded by nature was definitely one of the highlights of our trip. The entire property is beautifully designed, with wooden walkways, small bridges, a natural pool, and even a wellness area that makes it easy to slow down after a day of exploring.
If you prefer staying close to everything, Old Bled House is a fantastic choice. This charming boutique hotel combines traditional Alpine style with modern comfort and is only a short walk from Lake Bled, cafés, and restaurants.
From the moment we arrived, it felt warm and welcoming. The wooden interiors give the hotel a cozy mountain atmosphere, while the central location makes it easy to explore Bled on foot. It’s the perfect place to come back to after a day of hiking, sightseeing, or relaxing by the lake.
If we had to choose just one, we’d pick Garden Village Bled for its unforgettable treehouses and peaceful setting, it was one of the most unique places we’ve ever stayed. But if you’re visiting Bled for the first time and want to be within walking distance of all the main attractions, Old Bled House is hard to beat. Whichever you choose, you’re in for a memorable stay.
While Lake Bled is undoubtedly the highlight of the region, it’s also the perfect base for exploring some of Slovenia’s most beautiful landscapes. From crystal-clear lakes and alpine valleys to charming towns and dramatic gorges, there are plenty of incredible day trips just a short drive away.
Located in the heart of Triglav National Park, Lake Bohinj is often described as Bled’s quieter and more natural sibling. Surrounded by dramatic mountains and untouched forests, it’s the perfect destination if you want to escape the crowds. Spend the day swimming, kayaking, hiking, or simply enjoying the peaceful scenery.

If you’re planning to swim in Lake Bled, visit between June and September. For the best combination of warm water, pleasant weather, and fewer crowds, September is our favorite month.
Lake Bled may be one of Slovenia’s most famous destinations, but a few simple tips can make your visit even more enjoyable. Here’s everything we wish we had known before our trip.
Sunrise is by far the most magical time to experience Lake Bled. The lake is calm, the light is perfect for photos, and you’ll have many of the popular viewpoints almost to yourself. The sun rises relatively early here, especially in the summer months, around 5:00 a.m.
If you’re visiting by car, arrive early to secure a spot. Better yet, stay within walking distance of the lake so you can explore without worrying about parking. It gets very crowded here, especially on warm days in summer.
During summer, the lake is surprisingly warm and crystal clear. Even if swimming isn’t on your itinerary, you’ll probably change your mind once you see the water.
It may sound touristy, but it’s a local classic for a reason. Grab a slice with a coffee and enjoy the view over the lake.
While it’s possible to visit Bled on a day trip, spending a little longer gives you time to explore nearby places like Lake Bohinj, Vintgar Gorge, or Triglav National Park without feeling rushed.
