Velika Planina is a stunning shepherd’s settlement on a picturesque high mountain pasture that includes around 140 huts and is known for its typical architecture. One of those places in Slovenia that seems unreal. Velika planina is about 55 kilometers north of Ljubljana by car. The entire Alm is considered car-free. It is located at an altitude of approximately 1,610 meters above the Adriatic and from above you have a fantastic view.
The picturesque landscape with the traditional shepherds‘ huts is a popular destination, especially for hikers and mountain bikers. Access to Velika Planina is also possible with a cable car all year round. Whether summer or winter, a visit here is always an absolute highlight. Dairy products are occasionally available from the shepherds, including the local cheese Trnič.

The best way to get here is by car. From Ljubljana it takes around 1.5 hours to get to the car park at the Hiertensiedlung. This costs around 5-10€ and from here you have to walk another 30-45 minutes until you arrive, as cars are not allowed up on the mountain pasture. Alternatively, you can take a bus from Ljubljana to the valley station of the cable car. From there you can take the cable car up to the mountain pasture.

The best time to visit Velika Planina is in summer, when the meadows are in full bloom and the weather is pleasantly mild. Hikes and excursions are particularly beautiful then, and you can experience traditional shepherd activities up close. But autumn and spring are also great times to visit the mountain pasture. Winter is ideal for winter sports enthusiasts.

If you want to take the cable car and chairlift, a ticket costs between 20-30€ per person, depending on the season. There is also a small restaurant and small huts on the mountain pasture where you can buy something.

You can rent your own cute little cabin here and sleep in it for one or more nights. A unique experience that we can only recommend.
