Getting to Burgas is quite easy! Whether you arrive by plane, bus, train, or car, it’s usually very relaxed and straightforward. We’ll show you the best options for getting to Burgas.
By Plane
You can easily fly to Burgas Airport (BOJ). The airport has good connections to major European cities like London, Berlin, Vienna, and Rome, with both direct flights and seasonal charters. From the airport, it’s about a 15-20 minute drive to the city center. You can take a taxi, use shuttle buses, or even rent a car. Flying is the fastest way to reach Burgas if you’re coming from abroad.
However, flights are somewhat limited, especially during the off-season.
By Bus
Buses run frequently to Burgas from Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna and other cities like Veliko Tarnovo. From Sofia, the trip takes around 5-6 hours. The buses should be quite comfortable. Tickets can be booked online or at the bus stations. The bus is a convenient option if you want a stress-free ride without worrying about parking or navigating.
A bus ticket from Sofia to Burgas typically costs around 16-20€ for a one-way trip when booked online in advance. Prices can vary slightly depending on the bus company and season, but cheap tickets are typically available for around 15€.
By Train
Trains are slower but very relaxed. From Sofia, the train ride to Burgas takes about 6-7 hours. The journey passes through scenic landscapes, including mountains, plains and small towns, which could be really enjoyable. Trains depart daily and you can choose between regular seats and sleeper cabins for overnight trips. It’s a good option for travelers who like to see the countryside and don’t mind a slower pace.
By Car
Driving to Burgas is surprisingly easy and scenic. From Sofia, the journey is roughly 380 km and takes around 3-3.5 hours via the A1 and A4 highways. From Plovdiv, it’s about 250 km and around 2-2.5 hours. The roads are in good condition and the drive takes you through rolling hills and charming Bulgarian towns. We enjoyed stopping for coffee and snacks along the way, making the trip part of the adventure.
From Nearby Coastal Towns: Burgas is a great hub if you’re exploring the Bulgarian coast. From Sozopol, it’s just 35 km (about 30 minutes by car or bus). Nesebar is also about 35 km away, roughly 30 minutes by car. Pomorie is even closer at just 21 km. We loved combining our stay in Burgas with short day trips to these charming towns and beach areas.
Things to Do in Burgas
There’s plenty to explore, see, and discover in Burgas. Since the city is located right on the Black Sea coast, there are also some great day trips you can take. We’ll show you a few fantastic things to do in and around Burgas.
Explore the City Center
We enjoyed wandering through the city center without a plan. Small streets, local shops, and plenty of cafes make Burgas feel lively but never overwhelming. While the center isn’t the largest, it’s very authentic. The short distance to the beach and sea is also a major plus.
Walk through the Sea Garden
We loved starting our days with a walk through the Sea Garden. The park runs along the coast and is perfect for slowing down, enjoying the sea views and watching local life. It quickly became one of our favorite places in Burgas. It’s just great to walk though this area.
Relax at the Beach
Spending time at the beach was a must for us. It was quite relaxed and chill and there where just a few people. Burgas offers long sandy beaches right next to the city, making it easy to combine beach time with sightseeing or a coffee break in town.
Visit Local Museums
To get a better understanding of Burgas, you should visit a few museums, or at least one. They offer interesting insights into the city’s history and its importance as a port on the Black Sea. Here you can go to the following museums, for example.
Natural History Museum
Archaeological Museum
Air museum
Museum Of Impossible
Ethnographic Museum
Watch the Sunset
Beautiful and spectacular, as so often in Bulagria. Watching the sunset by the sea or anywhere else in the city should be on your to do list when coming to Burgas. In the evening, the promenade fills with people and the atmosphere becomes especially relaxed and beautiful.
Take a Boat Trip to St. Anastasia Island
One of the highlights here is definitely visiting St. Anastasia Island. The short boat ride from Burgas harbor already feels like a small adventure. On the island, you’ll find a historic monastery, beautiful sea views and a peaceful atmosphere, a perfect escape from the city for a few hours.
Best Time to Visit Burgas
Our Personal Recommendation: If we had to choose, we’d definitely recommend September. The weather is ideal, the sea is still warm enough for swimming and Burgas feels relaxed but full of life, the perfect balance for us.
Spring (April-May)
Spring is a great time to visit if you prefer milder temperatures and fewer crowds. The Sea Garden is especially nice during this season, everything feels fresh and green and it’s ideal for walking around the city and sightseeing.
Summer (June-August)
Summer in Burgas can get quite hot, especially in July and August and the city is definitely busier during this time. That said, we can see why many people love visiting in summer. The long days are perfect for the beach, and evenings are lively and beautiful. We loved how you can stay outside late, enjoy dinner at seaside restaurants and have a drink in one of the many bars while the city stays alive well into the night.
Autumn (September-October)
We visited Burgas in September and for us, it was the perfect time. The temperatures were just right, not too hot and not too cold, with sunshine almost all day. We could explore the city comfortably and even take a short swim in the sea. The atmosphere was relaxed and the city felt less crowded but still lively.
Winter (November-March)
Winter in Burgas should be quiet and calm. It’s not a beach season, but it’s a nice time to experience local life, enjoy cozy cafés and explore the city without tourists, probably no tourists around during winter. If you don’t mind cooler weather, Burgas could be quite charming in winter.

Our Personal Tips for Burgas
After our stay in Burgas, we wanted to share a few personal tips and highlights from our trip, little things that made our visit more enjoyable and some things we’d do differently next time.
Highlights
Sea Garden walks: We spent hours strolling along the Sea Garden, enjoying the greenery, sea views, and the relaxed atmosphere. It quickly became our favorite spot in the city.
St. Anastasia Island: Visiting the island was a true highlight. The boat ride is short and scenic, and the monastery and peaceful surroundings are perfect for a few hours of escape.
Hotel Bulgaria: Staying in the city center gave us easy access to restaurants, cafes, and the main sights. The room view and underground parking were a big plus.
Sunsets by the sea: Watching the sun go down over the Black Sea was magical, a simple, but unforgettable moment.
Little Tips
Timing matters: Try to explore popular spots like Nesebar or Sozopol early in the day to avoid crowds. Beach days: Even in September, the water is warm enough for a quick swim, so don’t miss out on a short dip! Local food: Don’t hesitate to try small local restaurants and cafés – the seafood and traditional Bulgarian dishes were some of our favorites.
Things we'd do differently next time
Longer stay: We felt one or two extra days would have allowed us to explore more nearby towns and beaches without rushing.
Rent a bike: Burgas is very bike-friendly, and cycling along the Sea Garden or the coast would have been fun.
Plan St. Anastasia Island early: The boat schedule is limited, so booking the first trip ensures more time on the island.
Visit Lake Atanasovsko: We didn’t make it to Atanasovsko Lake this time, and that’s something we’d definitely change on our next visit. The lake is a protected nature area and known for its unique pink colors and salt-rich water. We’ve heard that you can even swim there in certain areas, similar to a natural salt lake, which sounds like a really special experience.
