Here you will find one of the most breathtaking places in Bulgaria. With its beautiful rocky landscape and the famous Belogradchik Fortress, it’s one of those places that are truly magical. Belogradchik is a small town located in northwestern Bulgaria near the border to Serbia and around 170 kilometers away from the capital city of Sofia. By car it’s probably a 3 hour drive. The name of the city comes from the two words: belo (white) and grad (castle). The city lies at an altitude of 520 meters. Belogradchik is full of history, culture and adventure.
Belogradchik Fortress and Rocks are located on the north-western slopes of the Balkan Mountains. They are the city’s most famous cultural and historical tourist attractions. The Belogradchik Rocks form a strip 3 kilometers wide and 30 kilometers long, and the rock formations reach a height of about 200 meters.
We hunt hidden gems, sip coffee in tiny cafés, and turn every street into an adventure. Come along as we share our journeys and the stories we find along the way. Welcome to our corner of the world!
Nature's stone fairytale! The Belogradchik Rocks are Bulgaria’s most surreal natural masterpiece.
Why you should travel to Belogradchik
Belogradchik surprised us in the best possible way. One of those places you need to visit when traveling to Bulgaria. The Belogradchik Rocks rise above the town and create an impressive natural landscape that feels different from anywhere else in Europe.
There are several viewpoints and walking paths that offer wide views over the rocks and the surrounding countryside. Especially in the early morning hours, the light makes the formations glow in warm colors and the atmosphere is calm and quiet. It’s an ideal place to slow down, enjoy nature and experience a less crowded side of Bulgaria.

How to get here
We found that getting to Belogradchik is quite straightforward, whether you’re driving yourself, taking a bus or choosing a guided tour.
By Car
Driving is one of the easiest and most flexible ways to reach Belogradchik. The roads are generally in good condition and having a car gives you flexibility to stop at beautiful viewpoints. It’s also great to explore the surrounding area at your own pace. From Sofia, it’s roughly a 2.5-3 hour drive and the route takes you through pleasant countryside.
Parking: Parking here is quite cheap and costs around 2 leva (≈ 1€, euro). You can park directly in front of the entrance to the fortress.
By Bus
Never tried it but you can also travel to Belogradchik by bus. There are regular connections from larger Bulgarian cities like Sofia, Montana and Vidin. Buses usually arrive at the main bus station in Belogradchik town and from there it’s easy to walk or take a short taxi to the rock formations and visitor center. The bus option is budget‑friendly and comfortable.
Guided Tour
If you prefer not to plan the transport yourself, joining a guided tour is a good choice. Many tours from Sofia or nearby towns include transport, entrance fee and a local guide who explains the history and geology of the rocks. This can be especially useful if you want to learn more about the area without worrying about logistics.
Belogradchik Fortress
Belogradchik Fortress is a historic fortress that rises directly between the spectacular Belogradchik Rocks. Originally built by the Romans, it has been expanded over the centuries. For us, it is special because the walls and towers blend so harmoniously with the rocks, history meets nature in a truly impressive way.
Tickets & Payment
Tickets can be purchased directly at the entrance. Cash is preferred; card payments are not always guaranteed. We recommend having some small change or euros with you.
Admission prices on site:
Regular price: 8 BGN (approx. 4€)
Pensioners: 5 BGN
Students: 4 BGN
Combined ticket: 8 BGN (includes fortress, Magura Cave, History and Natural History Museum)
Important: Prices are subject to change at any time. Prices during our visit were still in Bulgarian Lev (BGN). However, Bulgaria has been using only the Euro since January 1, 2026.
Opening hours
The fortress is usually open daily, mostly from 08:00 to 19:00, but times may vary slightly depending on the season.
Why is it so special?
The views: From the walls, you have a sweeping view of the surrounding cliffs, rocks and the valley. The light is particularly stunning in the morning (wich we recommend) or late afternoon.
Architecture & History: The blend of Roman, medieval and Ottoman architecture makes the fortress unique.
Nature & Tranquility: Unlike many other tourist attractions, it’s quiet and relaxed here, perfect for taking photos and soaking up the atmosphere.
The best Viewpoints
When we think back to Belogradchik Rocks, it’s primarily the viewpoints that have remained unforgettable. Over the years, we’ve learned that those who get up early are rewarded with magical moments.
Sunrise over the rocks
One of the most beautiful moments is early morning. As the sun slowly rises over the mountains, the rocks are bathed in warm shades of orange and red. We recommend being at one of the main viewpoints at least around sunrise. It’s quiet, peaceful, and the perfect time for taking photos without the crowds of tourists.
The upper viewpoint of the fortress
Belogradchik Fortress offers a fantastic panoramic view. The rocks here appear particularly dramatic, and you can see how the fortress blends perfectly into the landscape. We loved simply standing here and letting the grandeur of nature work its magic on us.
Small hiking trails away from the crowds
There are a few short paths right by the rocks that led us to hidden viewpoints. You don’t need a long hike, but the effect is huge: sudden panoramas, unusual rock formations, and the feeling of being almost alone with nature.
Our tip💡
Getting up early is worth it! Even if you don’t take photos, the atmosphere in the morning is unique. The colors, the light, the tranquility – the Belogradchik Rocks show themselves in their best light then.
Our tips for your visit
When we visit the Belogradchik Rocks, there are a few things that have particularly helped us to make the day relaxed and unforgettable.
Arrival
We recommend traveling either by car or on an organized day trip. Traveling by car offers flexibility, allowing you to make stops and visit different viewpoints. Buses from Sofia, Montana, or Vidin are an option, but somewhat less flexible. It’s also likely possible to travel from Plovdiv.
Best times to visit
Getting up early is worth it! The morning hours are especially magical: fewer tourists, a peaceful atmosphere, and the light bathes the rocks in warm orange and red hues. Later in the day, it can get considerably more crowded, especially during peak season.
The summer, spring and autumn months (May-September) are probably the best time to visit the Belogradchik Rocks. Winter can be very cold, with later daylight and earlier darkness. Hiking may be more limited then.
Local Restaurants & Cafes
We loved trying local Bulgarian cuisine in the city after hiking. Small restaurants and cafes offer hearty specialties, fresh pastries, and coffee with a view of the rocks.
Our tip: allow some time and don’t just rush through the fortress; the small towns and villages surrounding it are truly charming.
Extra tip
Comfortable shoes are a must! Even though the paths are well-maintained, it’s worth wearing sturdy footwear, especially if you plan to explore the viewpoints and the fortress. Bring some water and sunscreen especially during the hot summer months.
Our conclusion: With these simple tips, a visit to Belogradchik Rocks will be a relaxing and unforgettable experience. Getting up early, staying flexible, bring some cash and enjoying the local cuisine along the way, that’s how we best spent our day here.
