Best Time to Visit

Varna can be visited all year round, but each season offers a different experience.

Spring (March-May)

It’s a good time of the year. The city slowly comes to life after winter. Flowers bloom, the temperatures are mild and it’s perfect for exploring the Old Town or walking along the promenade without the summer crowds.

Summer (June-August)

Summer in Varna can get very hot, with temperatures often above 30°C. It’s ideal for beach days and swimming in the Black Sea, but the city can feel crowded during peak holiday season. If you enjoy lively summer vibes, this is the time to come.

Autumn (September-November)

September is simply magical, this was when we visited. The weather was perfect for sightseeing, the sea was still warm enough for a swim, and the sunrises and sunsets were stunning. The crowds are smaller, making it one of the most enjoyable times to explore Varna.

Winter (December-February)

Winters can be quite cold, sometimes even with snow. Many attractions or beach facilities are closed, but it’s a peaceful time to enjoy the city without tourists. Walking along the quiet promenade in winter has its own charm, especially if you like a calm and atmospheric experience.

Perfect Day Trips from Varna

Varna, for us was a great base for exploring the northern Black Sea coast and the surrounding countryside. Within a short drive, you’ll find nature, history, and quiet seaside spots that feel very different from the city itself.

Bolata Bay

Bolata Bay is one of the most beautiful and surprising spots near Varna. Just a one hour drive from here and around 70 km. Hidden between red cliffs close to Cape Kaliakra, the small bay feels almost untouched.
The beach is small and quiet, ideal for swimming and relaxing, especially outside peak summer hours. For us, Bolata Bay felt like a hidden gem, peaceful, scenic and well worth the short drive from Varna.

Golden Sands Nature Park

Just north of Varna, this protected area offers green forests, hiking trails and viewpoints over the Black Sea. It’s perfect if you want to escape the city for a few hours and enjoy fresh air and nature, even in summer.

Aladzha Monastery

Located close to Golden Sands, Aladzha Monastery is a medieval rock monastery carved directly into the cliffs. It’s an easy and fascinating half-day trip, especially if you enjoy history mixed with nature. Aladzha Monastery is located around 16 kilometers from Varna and it takes around 20 minutes by car to get here.

Nesebar

Nesebar is one of those places where history and the sea come together effortlessly. Although a bit further away, about 100 kilometers and a 1.5-hour drive, it’s well worth the trip. Walking through the old town feels like stepping into another time, with its narrow cobblestone streets, ancient churches, and traditional wooden houses overlooking the Black Sea.

Balchik & the Botanical Garden

Balchik is a charming coastal town known for its beautiful seaside promenade. The Botanical Garden and the former Queen Marie Palace are highlights, offering sea views, terraces, and a relaxed atmosphere, ideal for a slower day trip.

Cape Kaliakra

Cape Kaliakra is one of the most dramatic spots along the Black Sea coast. We loved seeing the steep red cliffs drop straight into the sea, and the views are breathtaking. It’s especially beautiful in the late afternoon or around sunset.

Burgas

Burgas is also a bit further away from Varna, but it is also worth visiting. The city feels relaxed and local, with a laid-back atmosphere that’s easy to enjoy. The long seaside park stretches along the coast and is perfect for walks, bike rides, or simply sitting by the water and watching the day go by.
What we liked most about Burgas is the balance between city life and nature. You’re close to beaches, cafés and shops, but also to lakes and green spaces just outside the center. Burgas is around 2 hours by car and around 130 kilometers from Varna.

Kamchia Nature Reserve

South of Varna, the Kamchia River flows through dense forest before reaching the sea. Boat trips through the reserve are a peaceful way to experience a completely different, greener side of the region.

Where to Stay

During our stay in Varna, we chose the *Amiral Hotel and it was a great choice. The hotel was comfortable, clean and quiet. It has been perfect for relaxing after a day of exploring.
We especially liked the location. It’s just outside the busy city center, close to the Sea Garden (Primorski Park) and within walking distance of the beach and the Black Sea. Parking was also available, which made getting around by car much easier. Overall, the *Amiral Hotel offers a great balance of comfort, location, and convenience and we would happily stay there again.

City Center

Staying in the center is ideal if you want to be close to shops, restaurants, museums and nightlife. Everything is walkable, but it can be busier and noisier, especially in summer.

Sea Garden & Beach Area

This area is perfect if you want a calmer atmosphere with easy access to the beach and green spaces. Hotels here offer a more relaxed stay while still being close to the city, this is where we personally felt most comfortable.

Residential Areas

Slightly outside the center, these neighborhoods are quieter and often offer better parking options. They’re ideal if you’re traveling by car or prefer a more local experience.

Things to Do in Varna

We generally spend a full day here and the city offers a great mix of culture, nature and relaxed seaside moments. Whether you enjoy exploring historic sights or simply spending time by the sea, the city has plenty to offer. Here are some things you can do in Varna.

Walk through the Sea Garden (Primorski Park)

The Sea Garden quickly became one of our favorite places in Varna. It’s perfect for relaxed walks, morning coffee breaks, enjoying the views, or simply breathing in the fresh sea air while gazing out over the Black Sea. It’s very large, well-maintained, and beautifully landscaped. A great spot in Varna, not far from the hustle and bustle of the city center.

Relax at Varna Beach

Varna’s city beach is surprisingly close to the center and there are many places where you can just chill. Whether you want to swim, sunbathe or just sit by the water, it’s an easy way to slow down and enjoy the seaside atmosphere.

Visit the Varna Archaeological Museum

This museum is located directly in the center of Varna, close to the Sea Garden. It’s a must if you’re interested in history. Seeing the world’s oldest gold in person really puts Varna’s long and fascinating past into perspective.

Stroll through the city center

We loved wandering through Varna’s streets, stopping at small cafes, local shops and bakeries. It’s the best way to experience everyday life in the city.

Explore the Roman Baths

One of the highlights for us was Walking through the Roman Baths feels like stepping back in time. The scale of the ruins is impressive and shows how important Varna once was during Roman times.

Watch the sunset at the promenade

Evenings by the promenade are special. You can spend lovely evenings either at the Sea Garden or directly on the promenade. The best thing to do here is watch the beautiful sunsets. The colors of the sky over the sea make sunset here a simple yet unforgettable moment.

Varna has plenty of cozy cafes and restaurants. From traditional Bulgarian dishes to fresh seafood, it’s easy to find a nice place to sit and enjoy the relaxed vibe. They are spread throughout the city, whether in the city center or around the Sea Garden; everyone can find their perfect spot.
