How to get to Nesebar
Getting to Nesebar is easy, especially if you’re already traveling along Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast. The town is well connected and can be reached in several ways, depending on where you’re coming from.
By Car
Driving here is one of the most convenient options. The town is located just 35 km north of Burgas and the drive takes about 30 minutes. Roads are well maintained and there are parking areas near the entrance to the old town. From Varna, the drive takes around 1.5 hours (100 km) along the coast.
By Bus
Buses run frequently from Burgas and Varna to Nesebar, making this the most common and budget-friendly option. The journey takes about 45-60 minutes from Burgas and a bit longer from Varna, depending on traffic. Buses also run regularly from Sunny Beach, which is only a few hundred meters away and just takes probably a 5 minute ride or walk.
Where to buy tickets?
Book online: BusExpress or redBus (digital tickets available)
At the bus station: Buy tickets directly at the ticket counter in Burgas South
From the driver: Pay in cash on boarding
From Burgas Airport
If you’re flying into Burgas Airport, Nesebar is very easy to reach. By taxi or transfer, it takes around 25 minutes. You can also take a bus from Burgas city center after reaching it by airport bus or taxi. Renatl Car from here is also a great option to explore more places and surroundings.
Guided Tour
You can also join a guided tour to Nesebar. It’s one of the easiest and most comfortable ways to reach this place at the Black Sea. Tours usually include transportation, a professional guide and a well-organized schedule, allowing you to enjoy the journey without worrying about directions or planning. Guided tours are available from major resorts along the Black Sea coast like Burgas, Varna, Pomorie or Sozopol and often combine transportation with sightseeing and historical insights.
Best Time to Visit Nesebar
When deciding when to visit Nesebar, much depends on what and how you want to experience this small town. We were there ourselves in September; the town is a popular destination and got quite crowded by mid-morning. Nevertheless, the atmosphere is very relaxed, especially when exploring the narrow streets of the old town.
Spring (March-May)
Spring is generally very beautiful if you prefer a quieter atmosphere, although it can already get quite busy. The weather is mild, the flowers are in bloom, and the beaches aren’t yet overcrowded. Ideal for sightseeing and first strolls along the coast.
Summer (June-August)
Summer is peak season here, with hot weather, plenty of sunshine, and perfect conditions for swimming in the Black Sea. Be aware, however, that it can get very hot, especially in mid-July and August. If you want to avoid crowds, it’s recommended to visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon.
Autumn (September-November)
September is one of our favorite times to visit. The weather is pleasant, the water is still warm, and it’s not quite as crowded as in the height of summer. Things get quieter from October onwards, the temperatures drop, but it’s still ideal for a leisurely stroll through the old town or dinner by the water. So it’s like spring one of the best time to come to Nesebar.
Winter (December-February)
Winter is the quietest time here; many tourist attractions and restaurants are closed, and the weather is cold, sometimes even below freezing. It’s especially worthwhile if you’re looking for peace and quiet, but swimming is obviously out of the question unless you’re incredibly hardy.

Top Attractions in Nesebar
We thoroughly enjoyed our short trip to Nesebar, and it’s a true gem on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. As soon as you enter the old town, you immediately understand why it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Narrow cobblestone streets, historic wooden and stone houses, and impressive churches make every stroll a special experience.
Old Town of Nesebar
The old town is the heart of the city and relatively compact. Historic buildings stand side by side, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of an old pirate town, with narrow streets, cozy cafes, and souvenir shops everywhere. The houses from the Bulgarian National Revival period are particularly worth a closer look. We enjoyed simply strolling through the streets and soaking up the atmosphere.
Churches of Nesebar
Did you know that Nesebar is known for its numerous churches? Some of them are even ruins. The Church of Christ the Saviour, the Church of St. John the Baptist, and the Church of St. Stephen are particularly worth seeing. It’s simply lovely to stroll through the old town and admire each church.
Archaeological Museum
Anyone interested in history should visit the Archaeological Museum. It displays finds from antiquity, the Middle Ages, and the Byzantine period. The well-preserved mosaics and ancient sculptures are particularly fascinating.
The seaside promenade
Besides culture and history, Nesebar also offers beautiful walking paths along the Black Sea. The promenade is perfect for watching the sunset or enjoying a relaxing coffee overlooking the water. Here you can breathe in the fresh sea air and unwind at the end of the day.
Beaches in the area
Although the old town itself isn’t directly on the beach, but relatively close by, the nearby beaches are easily accessible. Sunny Beach and smaller coves invite you to swim and relax, especially in summer as a great complement to sightseeing. Some very beautiful beaches in the area include:
South Beach
North Beach
Sunny Beach
Plakamoto Beach
Bunata Beach
Herakli Beach
Paradise Beach
Obzor
Our Conclusion
Anyone visiting Nesebar should definitely make time for the old town, the churches, and the museum, but also not miss the seafront promenade and the beaches. We found it perfect to combine history, culture, and relaxation in one visit.
Where to Stay
Unfortunately, we didn’t stay overnight here but took a day trip from Burgas. However, choosing where to stay in Nesebar can make a big difference to your trip. Whether you want to be in the heart of the historic old town, close to the beach or in a quieter part of town, there are great options for every type of traveler.
Old Town
Staying inside or just at the edge of the Old Town is ideal if you want to soak up Nesebar’s history and charm. Here you’re within walking distance of medieval churches, museums, narrow cobblestone streets, and cozy cafés. Most accommodation here is smaller guesthouses, boutique hotels, or family‑run inns.
South Nesebar - Close to Beach with Sea Views
Right south of the old town and heading toward the South Beach area, you’ll find many seafront hotels and resorts. This is a great choice if you want easy beach access and comfortable amenities. Many places offer sea views, pools, and included breakfast.
Sunny Beach Area
Just a bit north of Nesebar, the Sunny Beach area is ideal if you want nightlife, beach bars and plenty of activities. Here you’ll find larger hotels and resorts with entertainment options, water sports and vibrant evening scenes. It’s a short taxi or bus ride back to Nesebar Old Town.
