Places to visit

Tirana

Your Albania Roadtrip probably starts here. Tirana is the capital and biggest city in Albania. It’s the cultural, political and economic center of Albania. The city is known for the various gorgeous colorful buildings from the Ottoman, fascist and Soviet times. Because of its central location, Tirana was designated the capital of Albania in 1920. It’s an up-and-coming city with many facets and is definitely worth a visit.

We also arrived at the Tirana airport. It’s the largest airport in Albania with many destinations. You can easily get from city to city by bus. But probably the fastest and best way to get around is the car. Even though traffic can become very chaotic, especially in cities.

Blue Eye, or also known as Syri I Kaltër, is the richest spring in Albania and is located in the middle of the Mali i Gjerë mountains. The depth is estimated at 50 meters and the temperature here is always relatively constant around 13 degrees Celsius. The blue eye is located about 35 kilometers from Gjirokastër and 24 kilometers from Sarandë. It takes around an hour by car from both cities. There are also tours that offer excursions there.

There is also the option of taking the shuttle bus from Shkodër, or you can contact your local from your guest house and ask them about a transfer to Theth. How to Visit These Places in Albania

Your road trip through Albania

There are several ways to get around Albania, depending on how flexible you want to be and which places you plan to visit.

Our road trip tip: plan fewer stops per day and enjoy the drive. Albania is one of those countries where the journey itself becomes part of the experience.

Car symbol for arrival by car

By Car (Our Favorite Option)

We traveled Albania two times, once with our own and once by rental car and for exploring different cities, beaches and nature spots, this was by far the easiest and most flexible option. Most main roads are in good condition, signage is improving and you can reach almost all highlights without a problem. A 4×4 is only needed in rare cases, mainly for remote mountain roads. Having a car gives you full freedom and makes spontaneous stops easy.

How to get around in Albania, By Car
Bus symbol for arrival by public transport

By Bus

Unfortunately, we never travelled through Albania by bus, but many people we met recommended it. Buses and the famous furgons connect most cities and towns and are very budget-friendly. They work well for getting from one city to another, but schedules can be flexible and routes don’t always run frequently. For remote nature spots, bus service is often limited.

Furgons (minibuses): are the cheapest option; schedules are often spontaneous, and tickets can be purchased directly from the driver (usually cash only).

Train symbol for arrival by train

By Train

Trains do exist in Albania, but the network is very limited and slow. They’re more of an experience than a practical transport option and aren’t suitable for visiting most major sights. We didn’t actually see a single train, but apparently there are a few.

Conclusion: Your best bet is to simply take a car or a bus. These are the best and most flexible ways to travel through Albania.

Best Time to Visit Albania

Our recommendation

To travel to Albania works surprisingly well in different seasons. We’ve been here twice, once in May and once in September and both trips were amazing in their own way.

May felt fresh and relaxed. Nature was green, temperatures were perfect for sightseeing and road trips, and popular places were still quiet. It was ideal for exploring cities, driving through the mountains and stopping wherever we liked. It was still a bit cold for swimming to be honest.

September was warmer and more summery. The sea was perfect for swimming, the days were long and it felt like a calmer version of summer without the peak-season crowds. We were here for about three weeks and it only rained for half a day during that time.

Summer (June - August)

This is peak season here. Ideal for beach lovers. The Albanian Riviera shines with turquoise water, long sunny days, and a lively atmosphere, especially along the coast. However, it’s also very crowded, particularly in popular spots along the Riviera like Ksamil, Dhermi, or at Blue Eye. It can also get brutally hot here in the summer, with midday temperatures around 35°C.

Spring (April - May) & autumn (October)

Spring (April – May) and autumn (October) are our favorite months for a road trip. Temperatures are pleasant, cities are less crowded and nature is at its best, ideal for exploring towns, mountains, swimming and scenic drives.

Winter (November - March)

Winter is a completely different experience. It can get quite cold, especially in the mountains and some regions even see snow. Coastal cities stay milder, but many tourist spots are very quiet. Fewer restaurants and accommodations are open, yet that’s also part of the charm. Albania feels calm, local and untouched.

Overall, summer is best for beaches, spring and autumn are ideal for road trips and cities (but also swimming) and winter offers a slower, more authentic side of Albania (but its cold).

Where to Stay

Unforgettable stays where every place tells a story

One thing we really loved about traveling through Albania: finding unique places to stay is incredibly easy. There are so many great accommodations around the country. No matter where you go, here you will find a wide range of lovely places to stay at. From simple guesthouses to stylish boutique hotels or cute little huts in nature – often run by locals and full of character.

These were all the accommodations we stayed in during our visits to Albania, which we can definitely recommend.
Swipe to see which accommodation is suitable for you. ↓

Which area is the best to Stay at

Coast 🌊
When we go to the seaside, we love small boutique hotels or resorts right on the beach. Places like Ksamil, Dhermi, Himare, or Sarandë offer dreamy accommodations with sea views, cozy balconies, and the feeling of being in paradise. Perfect for sun worshippers or road trip breaks with a view of the sparkling water.

Cities 🏛️
Tirana, Berat, Shkodër, and Gjirokastër surprise visitors with charming city hotels, apartments, and boutique accommodations right in the heart of the old town. We love being able to simply go out in the evenings and explore the city on foot, and for that, a centrally located place to stay is invaluable. From stylish apartments to small, family-run hotels, there’s something for everyone.

Mountains 🏔️
Mountain regions like Theth, Valbona or Shala River offer tranquil accommodations, often in traditional houses or cozy guesthouses. Here, we enjoyed the fresh mountain air in the mornings, hiked through nature, and admired the sunset in the evenings with a glass of raki. Those seeking peace and nature will find true gems here.

Tips for Visiting Albania

Currency 💰
In Albania, the currency is the Lek (ALL). We usually carried cash, especially in smaller towns and mountainous regions. However, card payments are readily accepted in larger cities and tourist areas.

Safety 🛡️
We felt very safe everywhere – both in cities and in the countryside. Of course, as always, it’s important to keep an eye on your belongings, especially in busy tourist areas.

Cash & ATMs 💵
There are many ATMs in cities like Tirana, Sarandë, and Berat, but in remote regions, it’s advisable to withdraw cash beforehand. We usually carried a small supply of Lek to ensure smooth transactions.

Internet & Mobile Connection 📱
Internet connectivity is reliable in cities, but can be unreliable in rural areas, though still generally good. We mostly used an eSIM for flexibility and to be able to look up routes or tips while traveling.

Language 🗣️
The official language is Albanian. In tourist areas, many people speak English, especially younger people. A few words like “Faleminderit” (thank you) or “Përshëndetje” (hello) are always appreciated.

Food & Drink 🍽️
Try local specialties like “Byrek” (filled dumplings), “Tavë Kosi” (lamb casserole with yogurt), and fresh fish on the coast. It’s best to avoid tap water, especially if you have a sensitive stomach. Buy bottled water instead!

Final Thoughts on the Best Places to Visit in Albania ❤️

Albania surprised us every kilometer, from rugged mountain landscapes to idyllic beaches, from historic cities to hidden villages. Every place tells its own story, and every accommodation, every little path, and every view made the road trip truly special.

If you’re curious, adventurous, and open to surprises – then pack your bags, hit the road, and discover Albania for yourself. We can guarantee you’ll see places you’ll never forget.
