Shkodër is also the perfect base for exploring the north of Albania, including trips to Theth, Valbona or along the lake. Compared to coastal destinations, the city feels less touristy and more local, making it ideal for travelers who want to experience Albania beyond the beaches.

The best way to travel is by plane, bus or car. If you’re flying, the airports in Tirana – around 80km or Podgorica (Montenegro) – around 60km away from Shkodër are recommended.

We made a stopover in Shkodër on our trip. We were already familiar with the city, we’d been there once before in 2023, traveling by car through Bosnia and Montenegro. Especially in the summer, the borders were very crowded and we sometimes had to endure long waits.
This time, in 2025, we traveled within Albania, driving to Shkodër via Elbasan, Tirana, and Lezhë. The route was generally easy to drive, even though the traffic can be quite chaotic in places.
Shkodër is an ideal starting point for us, especially if you want to head further into the mountains. From here, it’s very easy to get to Theth – either by car or simply by taking one of the daily buses.
In our opinion, the best time to visit Shkodër is late spring and early autumn. We were there in September and the weather was very pleasant with warm days and cooler evenings.
In the height of summer (July and August), Shkodër can get very hot and there might be probably more traffic, especially from travelers heading to the mountains or the coast. Long waiting times at the borders are also possible during this period.
September is particularly well-suited with perfect weather for sightseeing, excursions to Lake Shkodër or as a starting point for tours to Theth, without extreme heat or large crowds.
July and August are particularly not recommended: intense heat, heavy traffic, and sometimes chaotic conditions, especially on main roads and at border crossings.
Winter (December–February) is also less than ideal, as it is often cool and rainy, and mountainous regions like Theth are sometimes inaccessible.
The most pleasant months are May-June and September-October.

The Ebu Bekr Mosque, also known as the Great Mosque, is one of the largest and most modern mosques in Albania, centrally located and easily accessible. It is a symbol of religious coexistence in Shkodër. Visitors are welcome to the Ebu Bekr Mosque, but must adhere to general mosque etiquette: dress respectfully (long trousers, covered shoulders), remove your shoes, and observe prayer times so as not to disturb worshippers.
Shkodër doesn’t have a clearly defined old town like Berat or Gjirokastër. Instead, the “Old Town” consists of several historic districts spread around the city center.
The charm of Shkodër lies in the streets, squares and everyday moments. Many lovely and beautiful places to visit and explore.
This Ottoman stone bridge lies about eight kilometers outside the city and is a tranquil, photogenic spot surrounded by nature. At approximately 108 meters long, the bridge is considered the most significant and best-preserved Ottoman bridge in Albania due to its length and 13 arches.
You can easily arrive here by car. There are only 5-6 parking spots, but you can usually always find a free space.
The largest lake in the Balkans invites you to take walks, bike rides, or simply relax by the water. The sunsets are especially beautiful. Lake Skadar stretches across southern Montenegro and into northern Albania.
It’s a wonderful destination for anyone who wants to enjoy nature, swimming, or simply the more relaxed atmosphere of Albania.
Shkodër is the main starting point for trips to Theth. Buses and shared taxis run daily from here to the mountain village in the Albanian Alps.
We ourselves drove from Shkodër to Theth. The route is impressive, but especially towards the end it’s very winding and steep. However, you’re rewarded with breathtaking views of the mountains and valleys. It’s a journey that’s not just a means to an end, but part of the adventure itself.

A vehicle with sufficient engine power is recommended; caution should be exercised in rain, snow, or fog.
Those who don’t want to drive themselves can use daily bus services and minivans (furgons) from Shkodër (and probably also from other cities like Tirana, Lezhë, or Vlorë). These are particularly popular during the peak season, although there is a wide range of options. They offer an affordable and stress-free way to get to Theth.
Whether by bus or car, Shkodër is the ideal starting point for Theth. The combination of good infrastructure, regular connections, and one of the most beautiful mountain roads in Albania makes the city the perfect base for adventures in the Albanian Alps.

It was lovely, being right in the heart of things: the pedestrian zone, cafes, and restaurants were right outside, and you could easily reach many places on foot. At the same time, the traffic made it quite noisy – a lively, but not entirely peaceful, experience.
On our second visit, we used Shkodër more as a stopover before continuing on to Theth in the Albanian Alps.
If you want to be right in the heart of the city, the center of Shkodër is the place to be. Here you’ll find numerous boutique hotels, small guesthouses, and bed and breakfasts, many just steps from the pedestrian zone, cafes, and restaurants. The first time we visited, we stayed right here – it was perfect for exploring everything on foot. While the traffic could be a bit noisy at times, that’s all part of the vibrant city atmosphere.
Those seeking peace and nature will find idyllic accommodations with stunning lake views at Lake Shkodra. Many guesthouses and B&Bs offer comfortable rooms, terraces, and the opportunity to spend relaxing days by the water. Ideal for couples, families, or nature lovers.
For travelers on a budget, there are hostels, inexpensive guesthouses, and homestays. They are usually centrally located or near the bus station. Many offer additional services such as tours to Theth or bicycle rentals – convenient for spontaneous excursions.
