Ksamil Map, Albania

Where is Ksamil?

Ksamil is a small seaside village located in southern Albania, along the Ionian Sea, just about 15 kilometers south of Sarandë and close to the Greek island of Corfu. The drive from Tirana takes around four to five hours, leading you through mountain roads, coastal views, and some of the most beautiful landscapes in the country.

What makes Ksamil so special is its setting. Surrounded by turquoise waters, tiny offshore islands, and soft sandy beaches, it feels almost Mediterranean in character. We love how easily you can swim to the small islands, enjoy fresh seafood by the shore, and simply slow down while soaking in the Riviera vibes.

How to get to Ksamil?

Ksamil is located on the southern Albanian Riviera, about 15 km from Saranda. Greece is also within easy reach, and Ksamil even offers a breathtaking view of the island of Corfu. Whether by car, bus or even taxi, getting there is relatively straightforward and easy.

Ksamil is very easy to reach from these places:

  • From Tirana: ≈3.5 – 4 hours via SH4 towards Vlora, then SH8 along the coast. Flexible route, ideal for stops along the way.
  • From Vlorë: ≈2 – 2.5 hours along the coastal road.
  • From Saranda: ≈25 – 35 minutes – a short, relaxed route along the coast.
  • From Gjirokaster: ≈1 – 1.5 hours via SH4 and SH8, winding but scenically beautiful.
  • From Durrës: ≈3 – 3.5 hours via SH4 and SH8, possibility of beautiful stops.

Ksamil is mostly accessible only by land: by car, bus, minibus, or taxi. Boats or small ferries are only available to visit the Ksamil islands just off the coast, not for traveling to the town itself.

Ksamil is easily accessible by bus from various cities in Albania. Bus and minibus connections are available from Tirana, Vlorë, Gjirokaster, and Sarandë, with journey times ranging from two to four hours depending on the departure point. Tickets are usually purchased directly from the driver or at small bus stations; online booking is rare.

Taking the bus is an affordable and straightforward way to reach Ksamil. The journey from Sarandë, in particular, takes only about 20-30 minutes, making it perfect for day trips. Along the way, you can enjoy the beautiful coastal scenery without having to drive yourself.

Taking a Shuttle or taxi is a convenient and flexible way to get to Ksamil. Especially from cities like Sarandë, Gjirokaster, Vlorë, or even Tirana, a taxi is a stress-free option, as you’ll be picked up directly at your destination and won’t have to worry about timetables. However, a taxi ride from Tirana or Durrës will likely be very expensive, so you should probably consider traveling by bus or rental car instead.

Arriving by Car in Ksamil!
Driving to Ksamil is one of the easiest and most flexible ways to reach the village, especially if you’re exploring the Albanian Riviera. The roads are generally in good condition, and the coastal drive offers some beautiful views along the way.

🅿️ Parking in Ksamil can be challenging during the summer months, particularly in July and August. You’ll find several paid parking lots throughout the village, and many hotels offer private parking for guests. If possible, choose accommodation with parking included and leave your car there, as most of Ksamil can easily be explored on foot.

🚦 Traffic in Ksamil can become very congested during peak season, especially between late morning and early evening. To avoid long queues and parking headaches, we recommend arriving early in the day or later in the evening. During the busiest weeks of summer, a little planning can save you a lot of time.

Must-Visit Beaches in Ksamil

We visited Ksamil in mid-September and it was the perfect time to enjoy its beautiful beaches without the big summer crowds. The water was still warm, and the bays were crystal clear. From lively spots with beach bars to quieter corners where you can just chill and relax. Ksamil’s beaches really feel like small pockets of paradise and visiting a few different ones in a single day made the experience even better. We show you some of the most beautiful beaches in and around Ksamil.

Pulëbardha Beach

Pulëbardha Beach is one of the most picturesque beaches in the Ksamil region. The bay is somewhat secluded, nestled among rocks, and boasts crystal-clear turquoise water and a mix of fine pebbles and light-colored rocks.

Unfortunately, like so many beaches in Albania, it’s packed with sun loungers and umbrellas. However, there’s a completely free area near the far end of Pulëbardha Beach.

Mirror Beach (Plazhi Pasqyra)

Mirror Beach, also known as Pasqyra Beach, is one of the most impressive beaches south of Ksamil. Surrounded by high cliffs, the bay has a dramatic effect, especially when the sun hits the clear water and the surface shimmers like a mirror. It is located right next to Pulëbardha Beach and Shpella e Pëllumbave.

The beach consists of a mix of white pebbles and rocks, and the water is incredibly clear, making it ideal for swimming or snorkeling.

Perfect for those who like to swim, snorkel, or simply enjoy the dramatic coastal scenery away from the crowds. A great spot for snorkeling.

Poda Beach

Poda Beach is a natural beach south of Ksamil. The bay boasts crystal-clear water, light-colored pebbles, bars, restaurants, and a relaxed atmosphere.

It’s perfect for swimming, snorkeling, or simply enjoying the beautiful coastal scenery. For those seeking a break from the popular beaches in the center of Ksamil, Poda Beach offers the perfect blend of tranquility and nature.

The surroundings are very peaceful, ideal for those seeking a smaller, less crowded alternative to the more popular Ksamil beaches. Anyone who appreciates tranquility, beautiful views, and relaxing swimming will love Gjiri i Hartës.

Best Time to Visit Ksamil

With its crystal-clear turquoise water, white-sand beaches, and Mediterranean climate, Ksamil is a fantastic destination from late spring to early autumn. However, the best time to visit depends on whether you’re looking for perfect beach weather, fewer crowds, or lower prices.

Our personal recommendation for Ksamil

For the perfect balance of sunshine, warm temperatures, and manageable crowds, we recommend visiting Ksamil in June or September. You’ll still enjoy beautiful beach weather while avoiding the busiest weeks of the summer season.

Eat at Mussel House

This is for you all seafood lovers – Mussel House is a must-visit. We stopped by for lunch and were immediately impressed by the casual, friendly atmosphere right by the water.
As the name suggests, their mussels are the star of the menu, cooked in a variety of styles, but they also offer other fresh seafood dishes like shrimp, calamari and fish. Everything is prepared simply and flavors are amazing, you can really taste how fresh the ingredients are.
The location is just perfect – tables with sea views make every meal feel relaxed and scenic. For anyone looking for a tasty, authentic seafood experience in Ksamil, Mussel House is hard to beat.

Opening Hours & Prices

The Mussel House is open every day from around 12:00 to 23:00.
Ideal for both lunch and dinner by the water.

The prices here are quite moderate to slightly above average for Ksamil, consistent with a seafood specialty restaurant. Fish dishes may be priced per kilogram, so it’s good to ask staff about weight/price before ordering.

For a good portion with a drink, you should expect to pay around 15-20€ per person.

How to get Around

Getting around Ksamil is easy thanks to its compact size. Most beaches, restaurants, cafés, and shops are located within walking distance, making it possible to explore much of the village without any transportation at all.

Walking Around Ksamil

Walking is by far the best way to get around Ksamil. The village is small, and many of the most popular beaches can be reached within just a few minutes. Strolling along the coastline is also one of the best ways to discover hidden swimming spots, beach bars, and beautiful viewpoints.

👉 Why walk?

  • Most attractions are close together
  • No parking stress
  • Perfect for beach hopping
  • Enjoy the coastal views along the way

Getting Around by Car

If you’re planning to explore beyond Ksamil, renting a car is a great option. It allows you to visit nearby attractions such as Butrint National Park, Mirror Beach, and the Blue Eye at your own pace. Keep in mind that traffic and parking can become challenging during July and August, especially near the main beaches.

👉 Best for visiting:

  • Sarandë
  • Butrint National Park
  • Mirror Beach
  • Pulebardha Beach
  • Blue Eye

Taxis and Buses

Taxis are widely available during the tourist season and are a convenient way to travel between Ksamil, Sarandë, and nearby attractions. Budget travelers can also use the local bus, which regularly connects Ksamil with Sarandë and Butrint.

💡 Tip: Always agree on the price before starting your journey if the taxi doesn’t use a meter.

Our Recommendation

If you’re staying in Ksamil, you’ll likely spend most of your time on foot. For exploring the surrounding area, a rental car offers the most flexibility, while buses and taxis are excellent alternatives for shorter trips.

Visit Butrint National Park

f you’re in Ksamil, a visit to Butrint National Park is a must. The park is just about 15–20 minutes by car from Ksamil, making it an easy morning or afternoon trip. We arrived early in the morning, but even then it was already relatively busy, so going early is definitely recommended.

There are free parking spots near the entrance, but they are limited, so arriving early helps secure a spot.

Opening Hours & Ticket Price

The park is usually open daily from 8:00 to 19:00 (hours may vary by season).

Entrance fee:

  • Adults: 1000 Lek (~10€) per person
  • Children 12-18 years: 500 Lek (~5€) per person
  • Children under 12: Free entry

-as of September 2025

Duration

Most visitors spend around 2-3 hours exploring the site, although history buffs may stay longer. We were also here for 2 hours and it was quite enough to walk a round through the Butrint National Park.

Highlights & What to Expect

The park is amazing because you can explore ancient ruins dating back to Greek, Roman and Venetian times while walking through lush landscapes, rivers and small lakes.
Our highlights were definitely the Buthrotum Theater, the Basilica and the Castle of Ali Pasha, each spot tells its own story and makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. The mix of history and nature is perfect, and even a short 2-3 hour visit gives you a real sense of the park’s beauty and significance.
We highly recommend going early, wearing comfortable shoes and taking time to enjoy both the ruins and the peaceful surroundings. It’s truly a must-see near Ksamil.

💡 Tips

  • Bring water, sunscreen (specially during summer) and comfortable shoes, it’s mostly walking on uneven paths.
  • Morning visits are ideal to avoid the midday crowds.
  • Combine with a trip to nearby Ksamil beaches for a full day experience.

Should you travel to Ksamil

In our personal opinion, Ksamil is very beautiful, but it can also get quite crowded, especially during the summer months. Many of the beaches are packed with sunbeds and umbrellas, and overall, it’s more expensive than other regions in Albania.
For us, Ksamil is great for a short stop or day trip, but not necessarily the best place to stay for a longer period. The surrounding area is stunning and offers plenty to explore, but Ksamil itself is very tourism-focused, with numerous beach bars, restaurants, and cafes. While this makes it convenient and lively, it doesn’t retain the traditional Albanian charm as much as other towns.
So yes, Ksamil is worth visiting, just keep in mind it’s more of a tourist hotspot than a quiet, authentic Albanian village.
