Where is Krujë?
Krujë is a historic town located about 30 kilometers north of Tirana, perched on the slopes of Mount Krujë. The drive from the capital takes roughly 30-40 minutes, winding through green hills and scenic landscapes that set the stage for a journey back in time.
The town is best known for its impressive Krujë Castle and the Skanderbeg Museum, honoring Albania’s national hero. Walking through Krujë’s cobbled streets and lively bazaar, you can feel centuries of history come alive.
How to get to Krujë?
The easiest way to get here is by car. The drive from Tirana takes about 45 minutes (30 km). This mountain town is an ideal destination for a day trip. Depending on whether you want to travel flexibly, cheaply, or comfortably, there are several ways to get to Krujë.
Tip: Arrive early in the day to avoid the crowds and have enough time to visit the castle and enjoy a leisurely stroll through the bazaar.
🚗 By Car
The easiest way to get there is by car. The drive from Tirana to Krujë via the SH1 takes approximately 30-40 minutes, depending on traffic (so it’s best to go in the morning). The roads are well-maintained, and there are beautiful views of the Albanian countryside along the way. The last 5-10 kilometers or so become a bit more winding, narrow, and steep. There are several paid parking options near Krujë Castle and the bazaar. For those who want to be independent, a rental car offers the most flexibility.
🚐 By Bus/Van
If you don’t have a car, you can easily reach Krujë by bus or minibus. Regular services depart from Tirana Regional Bus Station. The journey takes about 40-60 minutes and is an inexpensive way to get to the city. The minibuses usually stop right at the bazaar, making it easy to explore the city center. Tickets are often very cheap, costing around ALL 150-200 (1.50-2€) each way.

You can book a tour to Krujë online through various portals or on-site with local providers. This allows you to relax while learning about Krujë’s history. Tours often include transfers, castle entrance, and sometimes even a visit to the bazaar. This is ideal for travelers who want to make the most of a short stay. Such a tour from Tirana usually costs between 30€ – 70€ per person.
🚕 By Taxi
Alternatively, you can take a taxi from Tirana city center to Krujë. This can often be worthwhile if you’re traveling in a group. A taxi from Tirana to Krujë costs approximately €25–35, depending on the taxi company. We recommend BEE TAXI Tirana. We’ve used them twice and highly recommend them.

Driving to Krujë is easy, especially if you are exploring Albania by car. From Tirana, it takes around 45-60 minutes, with a scenic climb towards the historic town.

Parking is available near the town centre, but spaces can fill up quickly in summer. Arrive early if possible and explore the castle and bazaar on foot.
Traffic & Road Conditions
The roads are generally in good condition, although the final climb can be narrow and busy. Drive carefully and take your time around the centre.

A Walk Through Krujë’s Historic Heart
The Old Bazaar of Krujë is one of those places where the journey becomes part of the experience. Just below Krujë Castle, a cobbled street winds through rows of traditional wooden shops, colourful textiles and small antique stores. It is one of the most atmospheric places to visit in Kruje, Albania, and a great spot to slow down after exploring the castle.
What to See in the Old Bazaar
As you walk through the bazaar, you will find plenty of traditional Albanian handicrafts, handmade carpets, old books, jewellery, souvenirs and decorative items. Some shops feel almost like little museums, with vintage objects and antiques displayed from floor to ceiling.
The bazaar is not huge, which is actually part of its charm. You can easily explore it in an hour or two, but we recommend taking your time. Look inside the smaller shops, chat with the locals and don’t be afraid to ask about the things that catch your eye.
Shopping in Krujë: What Is Worth Buying?
If you are looking for a souvenir from Albania, the Old Bazaar is a much more interesting place to shop than a typical tourist store. Look out for traditional Albanian textiles, handmade carpets, copper items and small locally made crafts.
And because prices and quality can vary between shops, it is worth walking through the bazaar before buying anything. We found that some of the most memorable pieces were the simple, handmade ones rather than the typical tourist souvenirs.
Travel Tip: Bring some cash with you, especially if you want to shop in the smaller stores.

Plan around 1-2 hours for the Old Bazaar itself. However, since the bazaar sits directly below Krujë Castle and close to the Skanderbeg Museum, it makes sense to combine all three attractions into one visit.

Best Time to Visit Krujë
We have visited Krujë twice, once in April and once in September, and for us, September was the clear favorite. The weather felt warmer, the town was still lively, and the golden light made the castle and old bazaar especially beautiful. That said, every season has its own charm.

Spring is a lovely time to explore Krujë, especially if you prefer milder temperatures and fewer visitors.

Summer is the busiest and warmest time in Krujë. If you visit during this season, we recommend exploring early in the morning or later in the afternoon.

Our Favorite: September
If we had to choose just one month, we would return to Krujë in September without hesitation. It gave us the perfect balance of warm weather, fewer crowds and beautiful conditions for exploring the old town.

Visit Krujë Castle
Krujë Castle is the heart of the town and one of the main reasons to visit. Take some time to explore the historic grounds, learn about Skanderbeg and enjoy the views from its hilltop position.

Krujë Castle – Practical Information
Krujë Castle is easy to reach from the Old Bazaar and makes a perfect combination with the Skanderbeg Museum.

Park Outside the Historic Centre
If you’re driving to Krujë, don’t make the mistake of trying to take your car right into the historic center. Parking in Krujë is much easier if you leave your car a little bit outside the castle and Old Bazaar and explore the historic area on foot.
Our tip? Arrive earlier in the day if you can, especially during the busy summer months, as the most convenient parking spots can fill up. And when using Google Maps, searching for “Krujë Castle parking” can be more helpful than trying to navigate directly to the castle itself.
Stay for Sunset
If you have enough time, don’t leave Krujë in the afternoon. The elevated position of the town means there are some beautiful sunset views, particularly around the castle and its viewpoints.
Carry Albanian Lek
A few smaller shops and local businesses still prefer cash, especially around the Old Bazaar. Having some Albanian lek (ALL) with you makes shopping and small purchases much easier.
How to get to Krujë from Tirana
Krujë is relatively close to Tirana, which makes it an easy addition to an Albania itinerary. You can get there by car, taxi or public transportation. If you are doing an Albania road trip, driving is particularly convenient because you can explore the surrounding area at your own pace.
However, you do not need a rental car just to visit Krujë.
Whether you choose public transport or a taxi, the journey from Tirana can easily be combined with a half-day or full-day visit.
Try Local Food in Krujë
One of the best ways to experience Krujë, Albania, is through its food. After exploring the castle and Old Bazaar, take a break and try some traditional Albanian dishes.
