Artà has a way of making you slow down. On our morning walk through the old town, we wandered along quiet streets, looked up at the beautiful Iglesia de la Transfiguración del Señor and simply enjoyed the feeling of being somewhere that still feels wonderfully authentic. It is one of those places in Mallorca where you don’t need a packed itinerary, just a little time to explore.

Artà is located in the northeast of Mallorca, about an hour’s drive from Palma and the airport. The town sits slightly inland, surrounded by the green hills and countryside of the Llevant region, while the east coast is only a short drive away. This location makes Artà a great stop if you’re exploring the quieter side of Mallorca.
Artà still has a distinctly local feel. Its position in the northeast also makes it easy to reach from places such as Cala Ratjada, Canyamel and Capdepera, so you can easily include it in a day trip around this part of the island. For us, that combination of location, landscape and atmosphere is exactly what makes Artà worth adding to a Mallorca itinerary.
Artà is located in the northeast of Mallorca and is easy to reach from both Palma and other towns around the island. While there is a bus connection, we found that having a car gives you much more freedom to explore Artà and the beautiful surroundings at your own pace.
Artà is served by TIB, Mallorca’s regional bus network. You can check departures and choose the route that works best for you before heading out.
In 2026, journeys are free with the TIB Intermodal or Única Card. You can also pay directly with a contactless bank card, although the regular fare applies.
We found getting to Artà by car really easy. The roads around the northeast are beautiful, and having a car also means you can easily combine Artà with other places nearby. Plus, you don’t have to worry about fitting your visit around bus schedules.
Arriving by Car in Artà!?
Arriving in Artà by car is straightforward, but once you get closer to the historic centre, the streets become smaller and parking can be a little trickier. We would recommend leaving the car outside the old town and exploring the rest on foot. That way, you can simply wander without worrying about narrow streets or finding another parking space.

We parked at the large free car park at the end of Carrer de Manacor. It was a really convenient spot for us, as we could leave the car there and walk comfortably into the centre of Artà.
From the parking area, you are already very close to the old town, making it a great option if you are visiting Artà for a few hours.
One of the highlights of Artà is climbing up to Sant Salvador, the fortified sanctuary overlooking the town. Follow the historic steps from the old town and enjoy increasingly beautiful views over Artà and the surrounding countryside. We especially loved coming up here in the morning, when everything felt peaceful and the light was beautiful.

For us, one of the best things to do in Artà is simply to wander. The old town is full of narrow stone streets, traditional Mallorcan houses, colourful doors and little details that are easy to miss when you’re in a hurry. There’s no perfect route here, just turn into the next street, follow the old stone walls and see what you find.
We loved exploring Artà early in the morning, when the streets were still quiet and the first cafés were opening. It’s the kind of place where a short walk can easily turn into an hour of discovering beautiful corners, small shops and peaceful little streets.
At the foot of Sant Salvador, the impressive parish church dominates the old town. Its Gothic architecture and imposing position make it one of the most beautifullandmarks in Artà. We especially loved seeing it from different streets aroundtown, where it suddenly appears between the old stone houses.
If you’re in Artà on market day, don’t miss a walk through the Artà Market. The streets around the center come alive with stalls selling fresh produce, local specialties, handmade goods, clothes and plenty of little things that are tempting to take home. We especially enjoyed seeing the market in the morning, when everything was still getting started and the town had a relaxed, local feel.
It’s also a great place to grab something to eat while exploring. From fresh produce to typical Mallorcan snacks, there’s plenty to discover as you wander from one stall to the next.
👉 Good to Know:
After exploring the old town, we loved stopping at Café Parisien in Artà for a relaxed breakfast. The beautiful courtyard, good coffee and laid-back atmosphere made it the perfect place to slow down for a while before continuing our walk through town. If you’re looking for a nice spot for breakfast in Artà, this is definitely one we would recommend.
One thing we really enjoyed about Artà was discovering the small independent shops tucked away between the old streets. Instead of the usual souvenir stores, you’ll find handmade pieces, local products, sustainable finds and beautifully designed things you actually want to take home. We loved simply wandering around and seeing what caught our eye, you never quite know what you’ll find behind the next door.
👉 Our Tip: Don’t just stick to the main street. Some of the nicest little shops are hidden on the quieter side streets, so take your time and have a look around.
One of our favourite things about Artà was seeing the town from a little further away. From the surrounding hills and roads, you get beautiful views back towards the rooftops, with Sant Salvador and the parish church rising above everything else. Especially in the morning, when the landscape is still covered in soft light and fresh green, Artà looks incredibly peaceful.
👉 Our Tip: Take a little drive around the roads outside Artà and stop whenever you spot a beautiful view. Sometimes the best perspective of the town is the one you weren’t looking for.
Artà is full of beautiful architectural details that are easy to miss when you’re simply walking from one sight to another. Warm stone façades, traditional Mallorcan houses, colorful doors and old balconies give the town its character. We loved how every street seemed to have another little detail worth stopping for.

Staying in Artà is a great choice if you want to experience a quieter and more authentic side of Mallorca. Instead of large resort hotels, you’ll find charming boutique hotels, traditional townhouses and small stays tucked into the historic centre.
If you want to experience the real atmosphere of Artà, we would recommend staying right in the historic centre.
The narrow stone streets, traditional Mallorcan houses and small cafés are all around you. In addition, you are within walking distance of the impressive Sant Salvador sanctuary, local restaurants and the weekly market. For a first visit to Mallorca, this would be probably our favourite option.
Artà is home to some beautiful small boutique hotels, many of which are hidden behind traditional stone façades. Instead of large resorts, you will find individually designed rooms, courtyards, gardens and small pools.
A few of our favourites include *Yartan Boutique Hotel, Jardi d’Artà, *Forn Nou and Can Moragues. Each has a slightly different character, but they all offer something that is becoming increasingly difficult to find in Mallorca: a sense of place.
If you like stylish interiors, beautiful architecture and the feeling of staying somewhere personal rather than anonymous, a boutique hotel in Artà is hard to beat.
It might be tempting to book a beautiful finca somewhere completely remote. However, if this is your first time in Artà, we would stay close enough to the town that you can easily drive or walk in for dinner.
That way, you get the best of both worlds: the peaceful Mallorcan countryside during the day and the atmosphere of Artà in the evening.
And because some of the northeast’s most beautiful beaches are only a short drive away, you can easily combine slow mornings in Artà with afternoons at the sea.
If you ask us, the best time to visit Artà is May, September and October. The weather is warm and the temperatures are still comfortable enough to explore the old town, hike through the surrounding countryside or simply sit down for a long lunch without melting in the summer heat.

Spring is one of the most beautiful times to visit Artà. The surrounding countryside turns green, wildflowers appear everywhere and temperatures are perfect for exploring. It is also a great time to discover the town and nearby hiking trails before the summer heat arrives.

Summer is the best choice if your Mallorca trip is all about sunshine, swimming and long days outdoors. The beaches and coves around Artà are beautiful, while the warm evenings are perfect for dinner and drinks in the old town.

Autumn is our personal favorite time to visit Artà. The sea is still warm after summer, temperatures become more comfortable and the biggest crowds begin to disappear. It is ideal for combining beach days with hiking and exploring the town.

Winter offers a completely different experience. Artà becomes quieter and more local, making it a wonderful time to slow down and explore without the summer crowds. While it is too cool for a typical beach holiday, it is perfect for walks, culture and discovering authentic Mallorca.

At the end of the day, Artà is a cool destination all year round. For the best combination of warm weather, fewer crowds and beautiful landscapes, we would choose May, or October.
If beaches and swimming are your priority, go for June to September. For hiking, sightseeing and exploring the town, spring and early autumn are even better.
And if you want our personal pick? October. Artà just feels a little more like himself again.
Artà is a beautiful place to slow down, but there is so much more to discover just beyond the town. From wild beaches and hidden coves to rugged mountains and charming villages, the northeast of Mallorca is full of places that are worth adding to your itinerary.
Just a 25-minute scenic drive from Artà, Cala Torta and Cala Mitjana are two of the wildest and most beautiful beaches on Mallorca’s northeast coast. After parking, it takes around 20-30 minutes to walk to the coves, making the journey part of the adventure. The rugged landscape, turquoise water and peaceful surroundings are well worth the effort.
Just a 20-minute drive from Artà, Capdepera is a beautiful historic town that feels very different from the nearby beach resorts. Its highlight is the impressive medieval castle, perched above the village with sweeping views across the surrounding countryside and towards the coast. Wander through the quiet streets, explore the old town and take your time, Capdepera is perfect for a relaxed half-day trip from Artà.
Just around 15 minutes from Artà, Cala Rotja is a small and peaceful coastal spot near Canyamel. It is much quieter than Mallorca’s larger beaches and surrounded by rocky cliffs, pine trees and clear Mediterranean water. The setting feels natural and secluded, making it a great little stop if you are exploring the northeast coast by car.
From hidden coves and turquoise waters to wild beaches far away from the crowds, Mallorca has so much more to offer than the famous postcard spots. We’ve explored some of our favourite calas and unique beaches in Mallorca and these are the places we would happily return to.
Just outside Artà, the Parc Natural de la Península de Llevant is one of the wildest and most beautiful areas in northeast Mallorca. Rugged mountains, Mediterranean forests, hidden coves and spectacular coastal views make it perfect for escaping the busier parts of the island.
Artà is easy to explore, but a few small tips can make your visit much more enjoyable. We recommend arriving early, leaving the car outside the old town and exploring the historic centre on foot. Most importantly, don’t rush Artà, leave some time for a coffee, a local market or simply wandering through the little streets.
Tuesday is market day in Artà, and it is one of the best times to experience the town at its liveliest. The streets around the center fill with market stalls, local produce, crafts and plenty of people from the surrounding area.

Artà is a great base for discovering northeast Mallorca. With a rental car, you can easily combine a morning in the old town with an afternoon at Cala Torta, a visit to Capdepera or a hike in the Parc Natural de Llevant.
Artà is made for a slow coffee break. Instead of just ticking off the sights, take some time to sit down, watch the streets and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the old town. If you are looking for somewhere a little more stylish or contemporary, these are five cafés and coffee spots we would check out:
One of the biggest advantages of Artà is its location. You are close to some of the northeast’s most beautiful landscapes, while still staying in a real historic town rather than a large resort. For us, that combination is what makes Artà such a great base for Mallorca.
If you arrive by car, we recommend using the public parking at Carrer de Manacor, 16. It is a convenient option for exploring Artà on foot, as the historic centre is just a short walk away. This also saves you from trying to find a parking spot in the narrower streets around the old town.

If you have another hour to spare, Ses Païsses is one of the places we wouldadd to an Artà itinerary. The prehistoric settlement sits just outside town andgives you a completely different perspective on the history of the region.
And finally, our most important tip: don’t treat Artà as a two-hour stop between Mallorca’s bigger attractions. Give it half a day at minimum or stay overnight. The town’s real charm comes from experiencing it slowly.
