Krka National Park… What a lovely Place! It is one of Croatia’s most famous natural sights, located about 15 km from Šibenik. Known for its lush landscapes, diverse wildlife and impressive waterfalls, the park also includes the Franciscan monastery on Visovac Island. Although very popular in high season, Krka remains a beautiful place surrounded by nature.

You need to visit these places in your life! Why? Because Krka National Park feels like stepping into a completely different world. The moment you hear the sound of rushing water and see the waterfalls surrounded by lush greenery, you realize how special this place is. So so scenic.
If you’re traveling through Croatia and want a break from cities and beaches, Krka is the perfect contrast. It’s peaceful, beautiful and leaves you feeling refreshed long after you’ve left.
We came here by car and took the ferry to get here. In general its quite easy to get to Krka National Park, especially if you’re already traveling along the Croatian coast. The park is well connected and can be reached in several ways, depending on how flexible you want to be.
For us, traveling by car was the most relaxed option. Krka is located just a short drive from Šibenik and the roads are well maintained and clearly signposted. We drove to Skradin where we slept the night and took the ferry early in the morning, which is highly recommended.
Having a car gives you the freedom to arrive early, avoid peak times and explore nearby spots before or after your visit. There are parking areas close to the main entrances, which makes planning simple.
Buses regularly run from larger cities such as Šibenik, Split and Zadar to Skradin or nearby towns. From Skradin, you can either walk or take a short boat ride into the park. This option works well if you’re traveling without a car, but it does require a bit more planning around schedules.
There is no direct train connection to Krka National Park. The nearest train stations are in Šibenik or Split, from where you’ll need to continue by bus or taxi. For this reason, the train is usually not the most practical option.
From Skradin, official park ferries take you directly into Krka National Park along the river. The ride is calm, scenic and incredibly relaxing. We really enjoyed the ride, kind of part of the experience. As you slowly glide through the river canyon, surrounded by green hills and crystal-clear water, you really start to disconnect from everyday life.
The boat ride usually takes around 20 minutes and brings you close to the main walking trails near Skradinski Buk, the park’s most famous waterfall. It’s a smooth and easy journey, suitable for all ages.
If you prefer everything organized, guided tours from Split, Zadar, Šibenik or other cities are a popular choice. These usually include transport, entrance tickets and sometimes the boat ride from Skradin. It’s a convenient option, especially if you’re short on time.
Taxis and private transfers are available from nearby cities, especially from Šibenik. This is a comfortable but more expensive alternative, best suited for small groups or if you want a stress-free arrival.
If you can, arrive early in the morning or later in the afternoon. Krka gets busy during the day, and visiting outside peak hours makes the experience much more enjoyable.
Krka National Park is beautiful year-round, but the experience changes a lot with the seasons, from lush waterfalls to vibrant autumn colors and chilly winter serenity. We were here at the beginning of June and it was perfect and absolutely recommended. Here’s what to expect, month by month and season by season.
Spring is one of our favorite times to visit Krka National Park and surrounding areas. Temperatures gradually rise from cool in March to pleasantly warm in May, with daytime highs often between 12-22 °C. The trails are green and fresh, and the waterfalls are more powerful from spring rains.
For us, June was ideal and great. It was warm enough for a full day in the park but not too hot. Temperatures are usually in the 22-26 °C range, and many park services (like boats and shuttles) are in full operation. Water levels are still good, and the park feels lively without the peak summer rush yet.
Peak season of summer brings the warmest weather, often 28-33 °C or even more and everyone wants to visit the national park. While this means long, sunny days and great conditions for swimming near designated spots, it also means crowds and higher prices.
Must also be a great time of the year. Autumn could be one of the best seasons to visit. Temperatures cool down to comfortable levels around 15-24 °C), and the fall foliage adds color to the river valleys and forested trails. Early autumn, especially September still has good waterfall flow and is much less crowded than July and August.
Winter is the quietest and cheapest season. Temperatures are cooler, typically 6-15 °C, sometimes lower, and the waterfalls can be especially dramatic after rainfall. It’s a peaceful time for nature lovers who don’t mind cooler weather and fewer facilities, some park services (boats, cafes, shuttles, others) may be reduced or closed.

Arriving at Krka National Park by boat from Skradin was a highlight in itself. We took the first ferry at 08:00 in the morning, and honestly… We couldn’t have chosen a better way to start the day. The boat ride is included in the entrance ticket and takes around 20 minutes, but it feels much shorter because the scenery is so beautiful.
Such an experience to glide slowly along the river, surrounded by green hills and calm water, instantly puts you in the right mood for exploring the park. It’s peaceful, scenic and a very relaxed way to arrive.
We also stayed one night in Skradin, which turned out to be a great decision. The town itself is actually quite cute but small, charming, laid-back and a perfect base for visiting Krka early in the morning before the crowds arrive. Being able to walk to the ferry, grab a coffee by the harbor and start the day without stress made the whole experience even better.
Highly recommended, guys! Highly, highly recommended.
During the main season, ferries usually run regularly throughout the day, often every 30 to 60 minutes, depending on visitor numbers and time of year. In summer, services are more frequent and there are more ferries running the whole time, while in the off-season schedules can be slightly reduced.
If possible, take one of the first ferries in the morning. The light is beautiful, temperatures are cooler, and the park feels much calmer. Staying overnight in Skradin makes this incredibly easy and is something we would definitely recommend.
We were lucky enough to visit both Krka National Park and Plitvice Lakes, and while they’re often compared, they feel surprisingly different. Let’s say that both are stunning in their own way and kind of unique, but the experience you’re looking for really matters.
Plitvice Lakes feels bigger and probably is bigger, wilder and more dramatic. A place of turquoise lakes, endless waterfalls and long wooden walkways makes it feel almost unreal. It’s perfect if you want that “wow” or the “unreal” effect and don’t mind walking longer distances. For us, Plitvice felt like a full-day adventure where you’re constantly surrounded by water and nature.
On the other hand is the Krka National Park, which felt more relaxed and intimate. The waterfalls are powerful, but the park is easier to navigate and less overwhelming. Arriving by boat from Skradin already sets a calmer tone, and the atmosphere felt more laid-back overall. It’s ideal if you want a beautiful nature experience without spending an entire day hiking.
The two parks aren’t really that different in price. Plitvice impressed us more visually, while Krka felt more enjoyable and relaxed. Ideally, do both. But if time is limited, go for Plitvice for epic scenery and Krka for a calmer, scenic escape that fits perfectly into a coastal road trip. It’s difficult to choose, though, as both are truly unique and beautiful natural spectacles.
Looking for some good accommodations close to the Krka National Park? Choosing the right place to stay can really shape your experience. We personally stayed in both Šibenik and Skradin and also in Zadar which is not too far away either. Honestly, each of the cities worked very well, just in slightly different ways.
Šibenik is a great base if you want more than just the national park. It’s a lively coastal town with beautiful old streets, restaurants and seaside walks. We stayed here for one night in *Villa Pergola, which is highly recommended. From Šibenik, reaching Krka by car or bus is easy, making it perfect if you’re combining nature with city life.
Skradin felt especially convenient. Staying here allows you to walk straight to the ferry and take one of the first boats into the park, which makes a huge difference during busy months. We stayed at the *Hotel Skradinski Buk, definitely not a top-notch hotel, but well-located and a great base for exploring the small town and the park.
We also stayed in Zadar, around 70 km from Krka National Park, and honestly, it was one of the highlights of our Croatia road trip. We spent the night at *Olive Studios, which was easily one of the most beautiful accommodations we stayed at during the entire trip.
If Krka is your main priority, stay in Skradin. Cute town and just a little distance to the park entrance.
If you want a mix of nature and city life, Šibenik is a great balance.
And if you’re on a longer Croatia road trip, Zadar is absolutely worth considering, even with the extra distance.
