If you’re looking for an island that has a bit of everything, Krk is a great choice. We loved how easy it is to explore, charming old towns, quiet coves, vineyards and crystal-clear water are all just a short drive apart.
Krk feels relaxed and authentic, yet never boring. There’s a perfect balance between nature, culture and beach time, which makes it ideal for a road trip or a slower, flexible stay.
Our journey to Krk Island was easy and relaxed (by car) as it is one of the easiest Croatian islands to reach. It is located in the northern Adriatic Sea and connected to the mainland by the Krk Bridge, a 1,450 meter-long bridge that makes arriving by car simple and stress-free. Thanks to its location and good infrastructure, Krk works perfectly for road trips as well as for travelers arriving by plane or public transport.
Did you know that Krk has its own airport? The Rijeka Airport (RJK), located on the island, is mainly served by seasonal and low-cost flights, especially in summer. From the airport, you can easily reach towns like Krk, Malinska or Vrbnik by rental car, taxi, scooter or shuttle. Flight options depend on the season, so checking availability in advance is recommended.
Our recommendation is to arrive by car, because it’s the most flexible and relaxed option. From cities like Zagreb, Ljubljana, Split or Trieste, you can reach Krk Island in just a few hours. The Krk Bridge connects the island directly to the mainland, making it easy to explore different beaches, towns and viewpoints at your own pace. For us, driving was the best way to experience the island.
Buses connect Krk Island with major Croatian cities such as Zagreb and Rijeka. You can either travel directly to towns on the island or take a bus to Rijeka and continue from there. While buses are convenient for reaching main towns, they are less practical for exploring hidden beaches or smaller villages.
There is no direct train connection to Krk Island. The closest train station is in Rijeka, but from here it’s not that far to the island. From there, you can continue by bus or taxi across the Krk Bridge to the island. Trains are mainly useful if you’re already traveling through northern Croatia, but they usually require an additional transfer.
The first beautiful place on the island we visit is Vrbnik. The small town is located on the east coast and was built by the residents on a 49 m high rock above the sea. A fantastic place with its picturesque old town and many beautiful beaches in the immediate area. The unique dry quality white wine žlahtina is also typical of the region.
In the sweet city you can enjoy great streets and beautiful views. The restaurants here are also highly recommended and make this place a must visit place if you come to the island of Krk.
This beach is one of the most beautiful in all of Croatia. A beautiful bay with small white pebbles and beautiful blue water. The best place to park here is directly on the street above the bay and then walk about 10 minutes to the beach.
The town of the same name, Krk, is a beautiful small town with a fantastic old town. The cute small town with around 6,000 inhabitants is one of the oldest and most popular holiday resorts on the Adriatic. The most popular sights here include the Frankopan Castle, the picturesque main square “Placa Vela” and the Assumption Cathedral.
Soline Bay is located in the northeast of the island of Krk. The bay of Soline achieved great fame thanks to the Meline beach with its healing mud. The water here is also very pleasantly warm and very shallow. A perfect place to spend the day. Around the bay there are smaller towns such as Soline, Cizici, Klimno and Meline where there are good restaurants that will spoil you with local and international delicacies.
One of the most beautiful places on the island of Krk is the small town of Njivice. It is the youngest place on the island. A relaxed stroll along the coast and eating good fish is exactly what you can expect when visiting Njivice. The best way to get to Njivice is from Rijeka. It is around 10 kilometers from the airport. From there it’s best to take the bus or a rental car.
Krk Island offers a wide range of accommodation, from cozy apartments and holiday homes to comfortable hotels. It’s a very popular summer destination, so you’ll find great options all over the island depending on whether you prefer the coast, small towns, or something quieter inland.
We spent one night on Krk and stayed at *Hotel Verbenicum in Vrbnik, and it turned out to be a great choice. The hotel has friendly staff, comfortable rooms with beautiful views over the town, a pool with a bar and a really good breakfast. The location is also ideal, just a short 5-minute walk to the center of Vrbnik, making it easy to explore the old town on foot. We would definitely recommend it if you’re looking for a relaxed and well-located place to stay on Krk Island.
The whole island offers many comfortable hotels and smaller boutique-style stays, often with sea views and pools. Boutique hotels in towns like Vrbnik or Krk Town are perfect if you’re looking for something personal and stylish without large resorts.
Apartments are probably in our opinion one of the most popular choices on Krk Island. They offer mostly flexibility, good value for money and are in general ideal for road trips or longer stays. Many come with terraces, sea views and easy/free parking.
We would say that Budget Stays and Guesthouses are also easy to find here. These affordable guesthouses and smaller family-run accommodations across the island are great if you’re traveling on a budget but still want a local and authentic experience.
The best way to get around the island is by car. Rijeka airport is also located on the island of Krk. It is also popular for day trippers coming from Rijeka. There is also a good selection of rental car providers here, as well as at the airport. You can also explore the island by bus. However, most buses do not go to the smaller towns, bays and beaches. It is therefore best to explore the island of Krk by rental car, your own car or scooter.
The island is easy to explore, but a few tips can make your stay even better. From getting around to choosing the right beaches and timing your visits, these are the things we found most helpful during our time on the island.
While buses connect the main towns, having your own car or maybe a scooter makes a huge difference on Krk Island. Many of the most beautiful beaches, viewpoints and small villages are easiest to reach by car. Distances are short, roads are in good condition and parking is usually available, especially outside peak season.
Old towns like Vrbnik or Krk Town are best explored in the early morning or late afternoon. Midday can get busy and hot, especially in summer. Visiting later in the day also means softer light and beautiful sunset views along the coast.
Krk is known for its crystal-clear water, but many beaches are pebbly rather than sandy. Water shoes are useful and make swimming more comfortable. Some of the nicest spots are small coves you’ll find by driving along the coast, don’t hesitate to stop when something looks inviting.
Best Beaches on the Island:
Try local products such as Žlahtina wine from Vrbnik, fresh seafood, olive oil and local cheese. Eating slightly away from the main tourist streets often leads to better food and a more relaxed atmosphere. Small konobas (traditional taverns) are usually a safe bet.
Croatia uses the Euro (€), and card payment is widely accepted. Still, it’s useful to carry some cash for small cafes or parking. Tap water is drinkable and supermarkets are easy to find across the island. Did you know that Croatia has one of the best drinking water qualities in Europe?
Krk is very popular in summer, especially during the hot months, July and August. If you prefer a calmer experience, visit in June or September, when the weather is still great but the island feels more relaxed. Parking and accommodation are also easier to manage outside peak season.
Stick to marked paths when hiking, don’t leave trash behind, and respect quiet residential areas, especially in small villages. Many locals live on the island year-round, and a friendly attitude goes a long way.
Even though many locals speak English, learning a few basic Croatian phrases can go a long way. It shows respect, makes interactions friendlier, and often brings a smile to people’s faces.
