Durrës

Where is Durrës?

Durrës is located on the central coast of Albania, along the Adriatic Sea, just about 35 kilometers west of Tirana. The city is easily reached by a short drive or a quick ferry from the port, making it a popular destination for both locals and travelers.

Walking through Durrës, you’ll notice the mix of history and modern life. The ancient Roman amphitheater sits just a short stroll from lively beaches, bustling markets, and seaside cafés. How to get to Durrës

Getting to Durrës is actually super easy, no matter how you travel. If you’re coming by plane, the best option is to fly to the capital city, Tirana. From there, it’s about 40 kilometers to Durrës. The best way to cover this distance is by car. Alternatively, you can take a bus or a taxi.

We drove there with our rental car and it took us around 35–45 minutes from Tirana, mostly on a straight, relaxed road (highway). Having a car gives you flexibility; you can stop spontaneously and drive along the coast – we really enjoyed that.

Durrës is very well connected to Tirana and other Albanian cities by bus. From Tirana, buses leave regularly from the main bus station, taking roughly 40–50 minutes to reach Durrës. Tickets are inexpensive, usually just a few euros, and buses are a simple way to travel if you don’t have a car.

The port city is probably also well connected with other cities in Albania.

Durrës is Albania’s largest port, with regular ferry connections from Italy (mainly Bari and Ancona). The ferries are usually overnight trips, allowing passengers to arrive fresh in the morning, ready to start exploring. Ferries can accommodate cars, making them convenient for travelers bringing their own vehicle.

No matter how you travel, Durrës is easily accessible and perfect for a spontaneous day trip or a relaxed start to your Albanian adventure.

When we visited Durrës, we found parking surprisingly easy – but a little planning helps. Near the beach and promenade, there are both paid and free parking spots, though the free ones can fill up quickly in summer.

Places to visit in Durrës

Amphitheatre

The Roman amphitheater in Durrës is impressively large and surprisingly well-preserved. We were fascinated to stumble upon such a piece of history right in the heart of the city. It’s easy to imagine thousands of spectators once watching gladiator fights and performances here. An absolute must-see for history buffs.

Fatih Mosque

At first glance, the Fatih Mosque appears unassuming. The courtyard invites visitors to linger, and the artistic details inside are a fine example of Ottoman architecture. A short stop is worthwhile if you want to explore the city’s historical heritage.

Venetian Tower

The Venetian Tower is an imposing landmark right on the harbor. We found it fascinating how it symbolizes Durrës’ long history as a strategic coastal city. From here, you also have a beautiful view of the harbor and the activity on the waterfront.

Byzantine Forum

The Byzantine Forum was once the vibrant heart of the city. The ruins offer a glimpse into ancient city life, markets, and trade. We could easily imagine how bustling it must have been centuries ago.

Sfinksi

Sfinksi is a hidden gem right on the Durrës promenade. It’s a concrete platform completed in 2015. Here you can relax and enjoy sea views and sunsets. Directly opposite are several cafes where you can also sit comfortably and have a cappuccino.

Archaeological Museum

The Archaeological Museum is a must-see for anyone wanting to learn more about the history of Durrës. The collection ranges from ancient artifacts to medieval finds. Nice place, fascinating by the diversity and the stories behind every piece.

Beach promenade

The long beach promenade is perfect for a leisurely stroll. Especially in the evenings, the hustle and bustle of the city blends with the relaxed beach atmosphere. The pier is also located here. Along the promenade, you can enjoy people-watching, exercise, discover ice cream parlors, and experience the sunset over the sea.

Kallmi Beach

Kallmi Beach is significantly quieter than the city beaches and offers clear water and soft sand. We took advantage of the morning for a refreshing swim and enjoyed the peace and quiet away from the tourist crowds. Ideal if you’re looking for a moment of relaxation.

City Walls of Durrës

The city walls of Durrës are a fascinating relic from a bygone era. Strolling through the old town, we admired the ancient walls that once protected the city and provided it with a secure center.

Main Square & Boulevard

Durrës’ main square is the heart of the city, located opposite the Fatih Mosque. It’s a great place to experience everyday life in Durrës firsthand. The boulevard is also nearby and ideal for a leisurely stroll. Perfect for browsing, enjoying a coffee, or simply soaking up the atmosphere of the city.

Best time to visit Durrës

We were here at the beginning of September

We were in Durrës at the beginning of September – and it was absolutely perfect! 🌞 The great thing about Durrës is that it never gets really crowded; even in peak season, it feels relaxed. At the beginning of September, the weather was perfectly warm, sunny, but not oppressively hot and the sea was still wonderful for swimming.

Generally speaking, the best time to visit Durrës is from May to October. Spring is mild and ideal for sightseeing, summer is perfect for the beach and sea, and autumn is particularly relaxed with still-warm water and fewer tourists. Winter is cool and rainy, therefore not really suitable for a beach holiday.

Where to Stay

Durrës is perfect for a relaxing coastal holiday – but where is the best place to stay? It depends on what you are looking for: proximity to the beach, sightseeing or a quiet atmosphere.

Right on the beach:
If you want to jump straight into the sea in the morning, hotels and apartments along the coast are ideal. Many offer sea views, private balconies, and easy access to cafes and restaurants. Perfect for families or beach lovers.

In the Old Town:
The Old Town is charming and peaceful, with narrow streets, historical landmarks, and local restaurants. Here you’re right in the heart of city life, yet still close to the beach. But it’s also not that far to the promenade and beaches.

Budget & Apartments:
Those who want to remain independent will find many affordable apartments and guesthouses in Durrës. Particularly at the beginning of September or outside of peak season, very fair prices can be found.

Our tip - Where we stayed

We didn’t stay directly in Durrës, but at *Agroturizëm Gjepali in Shijak, which was absolutely wonderful! The property is idyllically situated just outside the city, surrounded by lush greenery and tranquility, yet close enough to easily reach Durrës.

The rooms are cozy and well-maintained, and the highlight was definitely the local cuisine – fresh, delicious, and prepared with great care. The grounds themselves are beautiful: perfect for relaxing, having breakfast outdoors, or simply enjoying nature.

What to expect when coming here

We only spent about half a day in Durrës, and that was plenty of time to experience the city. Durrës is charming, manageable in size, and perfect for a day trip. You can stroll leisurely through the old town, admire the historical sights, and relax in one of the cafés that exude typical Mediterranean flair. The city simply invites you to explore and enjoy it at your own pace, without any rush.

For us, Durrës was the ideal blend of proximity to the beach, history, and relaxed city life. Perfect if you only have a short time or simply want a quiet stopover.
