There are places where a hike is simply a walk, and then there is Caminito del Rey. Hanging high above the dramatic gorges of Andalusia, this spectacular trail combines breathtaking views, sheer cliffs and a fascinating history. Once feared as one of Spain’s most dangerous paths, it has been transformed into an unforgettable adventure that still gives you that little rush of adrenaline.
where adventure meets the wild heart of andalusia
The Caminito del Rey is located in the province of Málaga, in the heart of Andalusia, southern Spain. The famous walkway winds through the dramatic Desfiladero de los Gaitanes gorge, surrounded by towering limestone cliffs and the turquoise waters of the Guadalhorce River.
It is about an hour’s drive from Málaga, making it an easy day trip if you are exploring the region. We loved how quickly the landscape changes once you leave the city behind, suddenly, you are surrounded by rugged mountains, deep gorges and one of Spain’s most unforgettable hiking trails.
Getting to the Caminito del Rey is actually easier than you might think. Whether you are coming from Málaga, Granada, or exploring Andalusia by car, there are several ways to reach this spectacular hiking trail. We chose to come by car, which gave us the most flexibility and made it easy to combine the Caminito del Rey with other places in the region.
The Caminito del Rey is located in the province of Málaga, between the towns of Ardales and El Chorro. Because of its location, it makes a great day trip from both Málaga and Granada.
From Málaga, the journey is particularly straightforward, while coming from Granada takes a little longer. Depending on your travel plans, you can reach the area by train, bus, or car.
Taking the train is one of the easiest options if you do not have a rental car. The nearest railway station is El Chorro, which is located close to the Caminito del Rey.
There are train connections from Málaga towards El Chorro, although you should always check the current timetable before your trip. From El Chorro, you can continue towards the entrance of the Caminito del Rey using the local shuttle bus.
If you are travelling independently, the train can be a very convenient option because you do not have to worry about parking.
Another option is travelling by bus, particularly from Málaga or nearby towns. However, connections can be more limited than by train or car, so it is worth checking the current schedules before setting off.
For us, the bus is more useful as a local shuttle between the parking area and the Caminito del Rey entrance rather than as the main way of travelling from Málaga or Granada.
If you are exploring Andalusia by car, driving to the Caminito del Rey is probably the most flexible option. This was also our choice.
The roads take you through beautiful Andalusian countryside, and having your own car means you can arrive when it suits you and explore the surrounding area afterwards.
Just keep in mind that the Caminito del Rey is not a simple point-to-point hike where you park directly at the entrance. There is a little more planning involved, especially if you arrive by car.
Arriving by Car at the Caminito del Rey!?
Arriving at the Caminito del Rey by car is straightforward, but this is one thing we would definitely recommend planning in advance.
There are parking areas around the Caminito del Rey, and from there you can use the shuttle bus to get closer to the starting area. This is important because the actual hiking route starts some distance away from the main parking areas.
We arrived by car and found the whole process quite easy once we understood how the parking and shuttle bus system worked.
🅿️ Parking
There are designated parking areas near the Caminito del Rey. Depending on where you park, you will then need to take the shuttle bus towards the northern entrance / access area of the Caminito del Rey.
We recommend arriving with enough time before your booked entry slot. You don’t want to be rushing around looking for a parking space or trying to figure out the shuttle bus at the last minute.
The bus takes you from the parking area towards the final stop, where you will find a small café/restaurant. From there, it is roughly 1.5 km on foot to the entrance of the Caminito del Rey.
Our tip: Check your ticket and the official access information carefully before your visit, because the exact access arrangements and shuttle-bus information can change.
The Caminito del Rey is a one-way hiking route of around 8 kilometres, running from the northern access area towards El Chorro in the south. The complete experience usually takes around 3-4 hours, depending on your pace and how often you stop for photos and views.
And believe us, you will stop quite often.

This variety is what makes the hike so interesting. It isn’t just several kilometres of walking along one wooden path.
One thing that surprised us was that the hike doesn’t start immediately when you arrive at the parking area. Depending on the access route you choose, you first have to walk towards the northern entrance and visitor control area. This approach can take roughly 20-25 minutes on the shorter route, or considerably longer if you use the longer access path.
Once you reach the control point, your ticket is checked and you receive your safety helmet.
And then you’re ready.
This is where the Caminito del Rey adventure really begins.
The first major section takes you into the Gaitanejo Gorge, and this is where the scenery starts getting seriously impressive.
The canyon walls become taller and the path gets closer to the rock face. Looking up, you can see enormous cliffs towering above you, while the landscape stretches out below.
It is also one of those places where we kept saying:
“Wow… look at that.”
And then five minutes later, we said it again.
The further you walk, the more dramatic the landscape becomes.
After the narrow canyon, the scenery opens up again as you reach the Valle del Hoyo. This section feels completely different from the dramatic cliffside walkways. Instead of being surrounded by narrow rock walls, you suddenly have a much wider landscape in front of you.
We really liked this part because it gives you a chance to slow down, and it’s much better laid out here than at the entrance, resulting in a significantly less crowded area. You can also see how varied the area around the Caminito del Rey actually is.

For us, this is where the Caminito del Rey really delivers.
The final canyon section takes you deep into the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes, where the enormous cliffs rise on both sides of the gorge.
The wooden walkway is attached to the rock face, with the canyon dropping away below you.
This is probably the moment you have seen in all those Caminito del Rey photos.
But experiencing it yourself is something else.
You can hear the river below, feel the wind coming through the canyon and look up at the enormous walls of rock around you. At several points, we simply stopped walking for a moment and took everything in.
And then comes one of the most recognisable spots on the entire hike: the famous hanging bridge above the canyon.
You’ve probably seen it online before. Standing there in person is a completely different experience, especially when you look down into the gorge and then back towards the cliffs behind you.
It is also one of the places where you will probably see plenty of people stopping for photos.
This is probably one of the questions we had before visiting.
The good news is that you don’t need to be an experienced hiker to walk the Caminito del Rey. The modern walkway is well developed, and the route is manageable for most reasonably fit visitors.
However, you should still treat it as a proper outdoor activity.
👉 Keep in mind:
The height is probably the biggest issue for some visitors. Even though the modern Caminito del Rey is safe and completely different from the old, deteriorated path, you are still walking high above the canyon. However, there are wide paths, barriers, and fences everywhere, so it’s a really relaxed and beautiful hike.
If heights don’t bother you, though, you will probably spend most of the time thinking about how incredible the views are.
We would plan at least half a day for the Caminito del Rey.
The actual walking time depends on your pace, but you shouldn’t forget the access walk, waiting at the entrance, photo stops and the shuttle bus at the end.

Our biggest advice is simple:
Don’t book something immediately after your Caminito del Rey hike.
Give yourself some breathing room. You’ll enjoy the day much more.
This is an important detail to know before you go. The Caminito del Rey is a linear, one-way route. You don’t walk back along the same trail to your car.
Instead, you finish near El Chorro, where you can take the shuttle bus back towards the northern access area and parking. This is particularly important if you are arriving by rental car.
👉 So before your hike, make sure you understand:
Where am I parking? → Where does the hike start? → Where does it finish? → How do I get back to my car?
Once you know this, the whole day becomes much easier.
After several hours of hiking through the canyon, the Caminito del Rey eventually ends near El Chorro. Here you’ll find a few small shops, cafés and food spots, perfect for a drink or a quick bite after the hike.
From here, the shuttle bus takes you back towards the parking area, so you don’t have to walk the entire route back.
Our tip: Take your time, grab something cold to drink and enjoy the feeling of having just completed the Caminito del Rey.

Choosing where to stay for the Caminito del Rey really depends on how you are travelling and what else you want to see in Andalusia.
You don’t necessarily have to stay right next to the hiking trail. If you have a rental car, you have much more flexibility and can choose between a peaceful countryside stay, a small Andalusian village or a larger city with plenty of restaurants and things to do.
Málaga is a great choice if the Caminito del Rey is part of a bigger Andalusia trip. You have plenty of hotels, restaurants, beaches and things to explore, while the hike can be visited as a day trip.
We have stayed at *Hotel Well and Come Málaga and *Parador de Málaga Gibralfaro ourselves and enjoyed both for very different reasons. Hotel Well and Come is a stylish city option, while the Parador sits high above Málaga and offers incredible views over the city and Mediterranean.

👉 Malaga is Best for:
Álora is a great option if you prefer a quieter place and are travelling by car. Instead of staying in a busy tourist centre, you can enjoy the surrounding Andalusian countryside while still being relatively close to the Caminito del Rey.
You’ll find smaller hotels, guesthouses, rural accommodation and charming fincas around the area.

If you want to be as close as possible to the hiking area, El Chorro is worth considering.
This small area near the southern end of the Caminito del Rey is surrounded by dramatic scenery and is particularly popular with hikers and climbers.
Accommodation here tends to be smaller and more rural, which can be exactly what you’re looking for after a day outdoors.

👉 El Chorro is Best for:
For our own visit, we chose something a little different from a typical hotel: Boutique B&B Cortijo Valverde Álora. It is a peaceful countryside B&B surrounded by the Andalusian landscape, with a pool, private parking and a much more personal atmosphere than a large hotel.
The location of the hotel is perfect, because from here you are only around 40 minutes from the Caminito del Rey car park.

If you are planning a larger Andalusia road trip, we wouldn’t necessarily move hotels just for the Caminito del Rey. Málaga, Álora, Ronda or other places in the region can all work well depending on your itinerary.
But if the Caminito del Rey is one of the main highlights of your trip, staying closer to the trail makes the day much more relaxed.
The best time to visit the Caminito del Rey is, in our opinion, spring and autumn. The temperatures are usually much more comfortable for a several-hour hike, and the landscape around the canyon can look especially beautiful.
We visited the Caminito del Rey in April, and we found the conditions really enjoyable. It was warm, but not unbearably hot, which made a big difference during the hike.

Spring is one of the best times for the Caminito del Rey. The temperatures are generally pleasant, the landscape becomes greener and you can often see wildflowers along the trail.
If you want a combination of comfortable hiking temperatures and beautiful scenery, spring will be always one of our top choices.
👉 June – August
Summer can be challenging.
Andalusia can get very hot, and you are exposed to the sun for parts of the route. Since the hike takes several hours, the heat can make the experience much less enjoyable.
If summer is your only option, we would definitely choose an early morning time slot and bring plenty of water.
👉 September – November
Autumn is another great time to hike the Caminito del Rey.
The intense summer heat starts to fade, while the days can still be pleasantly warm. We visited in October and really enjoyed the combination of sunshine and comfortable temperatures.
We think, October is a fantastic month for the Caminito del Rey.
👉 December – February
Winter can also be a good option, especially if you prefer cooler hiking temperatures and fewer visitors.
However, weather conditions can be less predictable, with cooler temperatures and a greater chance of rain. Always check the forecast before your visit.
If we could choose freely, we’d pick:
No matter when you visit, we recommend booking your Caminito del Rey ticket in advance and checking the weather before heading out.
And if you can choose your time of day, earlier is generally better, especially during the warmer months.

For us, having a car made the whole trip much easier, especially when staying outside Málaga.
This is especially important during the warmer months. There are exposed sections with limited shade, so bring enough water for the entire hike.
We’d also pack a few small snacks, you’ll appreciate them later.
The Caminito del Rey is a one-way hike, so you don’t finish where you started.
If you’ve arrived by car, remember to plan your return journey and use the shuttle bus back towards the parking area.
Always check the weather before your hike. Heavy rain, strong winds or extreme heat can make the experience less enjoyable, and access to the route can be affected by weather conditions.
If you can, book one of the earliest time slots of the day. We highly recommend it.
The canyon is usually quieter in the morning, the temperatures are more comfortable and the early light makes the landscape look incredible.
You also get a more relaxed start before the trail gets busier. For us, an early morning Caminito del Rey hike would always be the first choice.
Our biggest tip?
Don’t treat the Caminito del Rey like a race. Take your time, stop at the viewpoints, look up at the cliffs and enjoy the river below.
For us, that’s what makes the Caminito del Rey so special, it’s not just about reaching the end, but enjoying everything you see along the way.
