With over 6,000 inhabitants, Victoria is the largest city and capital of the island of Gozo. The city used to have the Arabic name Rabat, which means “suburb”. Victoria is located in the center of Gozo and is known for its medieval citadel, which towers over the entire city and region. From here you will have a wonderful view over the island. It is said that the area was already settled in the Bronze Age and is now the cultural center of the island.
It is a romantic city to explore but also to linger in. Most of the action probably takes place on one of the main squares in front of the baroque basilica of San Ġorġ. Here you will find very good restaurants and a few café’s. It is particularly busy in the evenings and you can enjoy wonderful traditional food with a great backdrop and atmosphere. Did you know that the residents here are called Rabtin t’Għawdex or Vittorjani?
