turquoise waters and dramatic mountain scenery
The Shala River, also known as Lumi i Shales, is one of northern Albania’s most impressive rivers and a hidden natural gem. With its turquoise, crystal-clear waters, it flows through a spectacular mountain landscape characterized by towering cliffs and dense forests. The river is also famous for the Shala Bridge, which spans the water and is a popular subject for photographs. It’s a favorite destination for boat trips, kayaking, and hiking along its banks. Whether you’re planning a day trip or want to spend several days exploring the river, everyone can find their perfect adventure here.
Most visitors combine their journey with a boat trip on Lake Koman, making it a truly memorable experience.
It’s best to book a guided tour, which will organize pickup, transportation and boat trips. Whether you’re planning a day trip or a multi-day adventure, the Shala River is easily accessible (by boat) and promises spectacular views along the way.
The best way to get to Koman Reservoir is by car, taxi, motorbike or guided tour, from where the boats to the Shala River depart.
There are now many companies offering boat trips to the Shala River. Most depart directly from Lake Koman, where several boats leave for Shala daily. You can book tours spontaneously on site or reserve them online in advance (recommended). Tours usually include round-trip transportation and time spent on the river – ideal for experiencing nature in a relaxed way.
If you plan to drive to Lake Koman yourself (the boats depart from here), it’s best to find out beforehand where you can park.
The road is currently under construction, but still passable and is being completely renovated or rebuilt. The last 10-20 kilometers are not yet well-developed and are therefore very dusty and bumpy. From the small town of Vau i Dejës (the last small town before the reservoir), it’s about a 35-kilometer drive (1.5 hours).
If you want to visit the Shala River, you should always start from Koman Ferry Port. Other starting points theoretically exist, but are rather exceptional and not recommended for typical tourist trips.
Duration: 2.5 – 3 hours
Traveling from Tirana to the Shala River is straightforward.
You start by driving towards Lake Koman, a trip that usually takes around 2.5–3 hours depending on traffic. The roads become scenic — and slightly narrow — as you get closer to Koman.
Once you reach Koman Port, you board a boat that takes you directly to the stunning turquoise waters of the Shala River.
Duration: 1.5 hours
If you’re staying in Shkodër, you’re already close!
The drive to Lake Koman takes about 1.5 hours through beautiful rural landscapes. Many travelers choose Shkodër as their base because the road conditions are generally easy and most boat operators offer morning departures from Koman Ferry Terminal.
Duration: 3 – 3.5 hours
Coming from Durrës, you’ll first head inland towards Tirana before continuing north to Lake Koman. The total drive takes around 3 – 3.5 hours, depending on traffic. Once at Koman Reservoir, your adventure continues by boat along one of Europe’s most scenic waterways, ending at the pristine Shala River.
Duration: 4 – 4.5 hours
From Vlorë, the journey to Lake Koman takes around 4–4.5 hours. You’ll travel north through Fier, Tirana and passing Krujë, then continue to the Koman region. It’s a longer ride, but absolutely worth it once you’re cruising through the dramatic cliffs of Lake Koman towards the Shala River.
Duration: ≈ 6 hours
Traveling from Sarandë is the longest option, usually 6 hours plus by car. You’ll cross much of Albania, passing through Vlorë and Tirana before reaching Lake Koman. Many travelers choose to stay overnight in Tirana or Shkodër to break up the trip.
Duration: 3 – 3.5 hours
If you’re coming from Podgorica, you’ll cross the border into Albania and head towards Shkodër. From Shkodër, it’s the same route locals take: a 1.5-hour drive to Lake Koman, followed by the unforgettable boat ride into the heart of the Shala River canyon. Total travel time from Podgorica is usually 3–3.5 hours depending on the border crossing and traffic on the way.

When to experience Albania’s nature at its best?
The Shala River is one of Albania’s most spectacular natural wonders: turquoise waters, steep cliffs and pristine landscapes make it a true highlight for nature lovers and adventure travelers. But when is the best time to visit the Shala River? We were there in mid-September and are sharing our experiences with you guys!
In our opinion, mid-September is one of the ideal times to experience the Shala River. During the day, it’s pleasantly warm – perfect for boating, swimming or simply enjoying the scenery. The sun often shines brightly without becoming too hot. However, it can get significantly cooler in the mornings, evenings, and at night. We therefore recommend packing warm clothing, especially for the early morning hours or for sitting by the water in the evening. A light sweater, jacket or windbreaker could become very important here.
The Shala River is also fantastic from May to August. Temperatures are higher, the water remains refreshingly cool (very cold, haha), and nature is in full bloom. However, this is also peak season, so there are more tourists. For those seeking a quieter experience, September and October offer the perfect combination of pleasant weather and fewer people.
In late autumn and winter (November to March/April), it gets significantly colder. The scenery is still breathtaking, but activities like swimming or boat trips are only recommended for hardy adventurers. There are also fewer boats operating in this area at this time. We would recommend the months of November to March only for hiking and photography trips.
The Shala River in the Albanian Alps is a breathtaking mountain river, but one thing to be aware of: the water is very cold year-round. Even in the height of summer, the temperature often only reaches 8–12°C (feels like it), and it’s even lower in spring, autumn, and winter. In mid-September, as we experienced ourselves, the air is pleasantly warm during the day, perfect for boat trips or walks. However, the water remains icy cold – ideal for a quick dip, but not for leisurely swimming. Anyone wanting to go in should be prepared for freezing water.
In short: The cold water is simply part of the experience.

Sleeping by the Turquoise Waters: Best Stays on the Shala River
Staying along the Shala River means slowing down and embracing a landscape where time moves quietly—where cozy wooden lodges, family-run guesthouses, and peaceful terraces offer a chance to wake up surrounded by nothing but nature.
We spent two unforgettable nights at *Villa’s Gio Shala River and it was just lovely. The cute wooden huts felt like a peaceful little hideaway far from everything else. Every morning we woke up to the sound of the river and those unreal mountain views, and every evening ended with quiet moments on the terrace and that cozy, simple atmosphere you only get in places that are still truly authentic. Staying here gave us the chance to slow down, disconnect and enjoy the Shala River exactly the way it’s meant to be experienced.
Planning Your Shala River Adventure
But before setting off, the question arises: How expensive will a trip here really be? In this article, I’ll give you an overview of the costs and how you can plan your visit in a budget-friendly way.
Shala River is usually reached via the cities of Shkodër or Tiranë.
By car:
Depending on your starting point, you should budget around 25-30€ for fuel and parking (and perhaps a coffee stop along the way).
By boat:
The trip across Lake Koman is not only essential but also a truly memorable experience. Tickets cost approximately 10-15€ per person each way.
Van & Taxi:
A minibus or shared van costs approximately 7–10€ per person (instead of a taxi) for the same route.
A private taxi from Shkodër to Koman Ferry Port costs approximately 50-70€.
If you’re willing to forgo luxury and instead appreciate nature, tranquility, and authenticity, the Shala River is a very budget-friendly and worthwhile option. For around 70€ per night, you get accommodation surrounded by greenery, right on the water-including a nature experience and the special flair that mass-tourism accommodations don’t offer. We paid around 125€ for our small wooden cabin (as of 2025).
The selection of restaurants and cafes is actually quite good for the region. Many guesthouses and accommodations offer breakfast and dinner. There’s also a small shop where you can get very tasty pizza (highly recommended). So, there are a few simple restaurants, bars, cafes and local tavernas.
A main course here costs around 5–15€
Drinks and snacks: 1–3€ each.
Local Beer: ca. 2€
Those who cook for themselves or have picnics can reduce costs even further.
Shala River offers a wealth of activities to make your visit unforgettable and many of them are surprisingly affordable or even free. Boat tours on the Shala River are especially popular, taking you deep into the turquoise canyons. A trip typically costs 15-25€ per person and is one of the region’s highlights. Generally, the ferry ride from Koman Ferry Port to the Shala River is sufficient on its own. We wouldn’t necessarily recommend an additional boat tour.
Those who prefer to explore on foot can discover the surroundings independently. Hikes and nature walks are usually free and lead to viewpoints, hidden coves and crystal-clear natural pools. For a bit more action, many accommodations and local providers offer guided tours or kayak rentals – depending on the duration and route, prices range from 20–40€ per person.
💡 Tip: Some of the most beautiful experiences don’t cost a penny – like swimming in the clear, cool lagoon of the Shala River. It’s perfect for taking a break and enjoying nature in its purest form.
Depending on whether you’re planning a day trip or a longer stay, the prices will naturally vary. All things considered, a two-day trip for one person can cost approximately 100–150€, depending on travel, accommodation, and activities.
For a day trip, you should budget around 50€ for everything included.
As soon as the sun peeks out from behind the steep mountains, the water becomes incredibly clear and almost crystal-like – perfect timing for relaxing by the river.
There are several good spots for swimming along the way. The water is quite cold, though – really cold. We tried it anyway and the quick dip was incredibly refreshing.
Along the river, you’ll also find plenty of sun loungers, wooden decks, and chill-out areas run by the small guesthouses, lodges, and cafes. The loungers usually cost a few euros (around 10€), but in return, you get a comfortable spot right by the water. Perfect if you just want to relax without having to search for a rock somewhere.
You can get drinks and snacks everywhere at small bars or directly at the accommodations – from cold soft drinks to simple cocktails or a delicious pizza. Ideal for a short break, especially when the sun gets stronger.
The best time to relax by the river is when the sun comes out later in the morning and into the afternoon. In the morning, much of the area is still in the shadow of the mountains, but as soon as the light hits the river, it becomes truly pleasant – perfect for swimming, reading, lounging, or simply people-watching.
In short: Here you’ll find plenty of places to chill, plenty of opportunities to take a dip, and plenty of bars for cold drinks. Simply a great place to spend a relaxing day by the river.
