On a trip to Austria, a visit to the beautiful city of Salzburg should not be missed. It is the fourth largest city in the country. Many of the city’s beautiful spots and sights are within walking distance. The old town is completely part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nestled between the three city mountains, Salzburg presents itself as the ideal destination for an unforgettable city trip.
Many people only associate Salzburg with Mozart. But the city has much more to offer. Fantastic palaces and castles, beautiful parks, museums, churches, breathtaking viewpoints, traditional breweries and music events. The region around Salzburg is also really worth seeing. Excursions to the salt mines, Hallstatt, Berchtesgadener Land and Königssee are among the most popular attractions.
let’s get lost in salzburg again
Salzburg is located in western Austria, right near the German border and about an hour and a half from Munich. Nestled between rolling hills and the northern edge of the Alps, it feels perfectly placed between city life and mountain scenery.
For us, Salzburg always feels like stepping into a storybook, whether you’re arriving from Vienna or exploring the nearby Salzkammergut region, the setting is instantly magical, intimate, and surrounded by nature. It’s an amazing place surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery and being here is just a lovely vibe.
We found Salzburg to be relatively compact, very charming, and perfect for a day trip. The historic old town, the Alpine scenery, and the relaxed coffeehouse culture make it easy to experience a lot in just one day – without any stress.
We woke up early, even before it was properly light. Outside, it was snowing softly, and everything was covered with a thin, fresh layer of snow—exactly the winter wonderland feeling you hope for in Salzburg.
We stayed overnight in a perfectly ordinary hotel near the main train station, nothing special, but perfect for one night.
Out into the cold we went and grabbed a coffee to go. Warm in our hands, cold air on our faces – a winter morning couldn’t start much better. From the main train station, we then took the public transport to the old town, completely relaxed.
Salzburg in winter has something truly magical and enchanting about it. The roofs were white, the streets were full of snowflakes, and we set off without a plan, simply letting ourselves drift – that’s the best way to discover the city.
The Getreidegasse wasn’t crowded yet; many shops had only just opened. We strolled past old facades, took photos, and stopped again and again to simply pause and soak up the atmosphere. Even without going into everything, the old town feels like a vast open-air museum.
It snowed all day… and later we slowly hiked uphill towards Hohensalzburg Fortress. The snow made everything look somehow more beautiful, almost like something out of a movie. The best way to get to the castle is by taking the funicular. It was cold when we got to the top, but the view over the city was absolutely worth it, even though we couldn’t see much.
We stayed there for a while and simply enjoyed the dreamy winter wonderland view over Salzburg.
Back down in the old town, we were starting to get hungry. So we went into a warm restaurant, took off our jackets, and warmed our hands. Just what we needed after a few hours outside. Hearty food, something warm to drink – winter in Austria makes you hungry. After eating, we strolled around the old town for a while longer.
What’s an absolute must-do when visiting Salzburg? A coffee and a Mozartkugel (a type of chocolate) or something sweet – Salzburg is especially famous for that. So, off we went to a café. Outside, the snow was still falling, and we relaxed in one of Salzburg’s most famous establishments, Café Fürst, and we absolutely loved it. It’s precisely these quiet moments that often make a day trip so special.
Especially in winter, it gets dark early here, but that gives Salzburg a completely different feel. The lights and the alleyways, the snow—everything was peaceful and almost fairytale-like. We strolled through the old town before settling into a nice little restaurant and enjoying some delicious, hearty delicacies.
Salzburg in winter definitely surprised us: peaceful, romantic, and perfect for a short but intense day trip.
