Where Is Koprivshtitsa
Koprivshtitsa is a small historic town in central Bulgaria, located in the Sredna Gora mountains, about 110 km east of Sofia and 113 km north of Plovdiv. The town sits in a picturesque valley surrounded by rolling hills, forests, and mountain peaks, giving it a peaceful and scenic atmosphere.
The surrounding area is dotted with traditional Bulgarian villages, rivers, and hiking trails, making it perfect for nature lovers and photographers. Its elevated location also offers stunning panoramic views over the Sredna Gora mountains, especially beautiful during sunrise and sunset.
Despite its small size, Koprivshtitsa is packed with colorful 19th-century houses, museums and cultural landmarks, making it a must-visit historic gem in Bulgaria.
How to get here
Visiting Koprivshtitsa is actually quite easy, more than it might seem, but the best way depends on your starting point and how flexible you want your trip to be. Most travelers start from Sofia, Veliko Tarnovo or Plovdiv, which are the nearest major cities.
By Car (Recommended)
Driving is the fastest and most flexible option.
From Sofia, the distance is approximately 110 km, taking around 1.5–2 hours through scenic villages and the Sredna Gora mountains.
From Plovdiv, it’s also about 110 km and 1.5–2 hours to drive.
From Veliko Tarnovo, it takes around 2.5–3 hours for 210 km
Parking is easy in the town center, making it convenient to explore at your own pace. Some parking lots charge a small fee, but not much. We parked in a large parking lot near the town center for around 4€.
By Bus
Buses depart from Sofia Central Bus Station (mostly Avtogara Serdika) and take roughly 2 – 2.5 hours. The Pice is generally around 8-12 BGN (≈4-6 EUR). From Plovdiv, buses take 1.5 – 2 hours and are more frequent. While buses are affordable, schedules can be limited, so plan your return carefully.
Prices may vary, especially since Bulgaria introduced the Euro (€) on January 1, 2026.
By Train
You can also reach Koprivshtitsa by train, which is a slower but scenic option. Trains run from Sofia to Koprivshtitsa or Strelcha, then a short taxi or local bus connection takes you to the town. Travel time is a bit longer, around 2–2.5 hours from Sofia, but it offers a unique view of the countryside and small villages along the route. Tickets are very affordable, usually 6-12 BGN (≈3-12 EUR, €).
Guided Tours
Day trips from Sofia or Plovdiv are popular and convenient. Tours usually include transport, a guide, and sometimes lunch, lasting about 8-10 hours from Sofia. This is perfect for those who want a stress-free visit with historical context.
Best Time to Visit
Choosing the best time to visit Koprivshtitsa depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for. We found that each season offers something unique.
Our Personal Recommendation
If we had to choose, late spring or early autumn is the best time to visit Koprivshtitsa. The weather is comfortable, the lighting is perfect for photography, and the town feels alive but not crowded.
Spring (March-May)
Spring is one of the most beautiful times to visit. The mountains and surrounding hills are lush and green, flowers bloom and the weather is mild. Visitor numbers are low, so you can enjoy the town peacefully and take plenty of photos without crowds.
Summer (June-August)
Summer brings warm, sunny days, perfect for walking around the cobblestone streets and enjoying outdoor cafes. However, it can get busy with tourists, especially on weekends. The evenings are long, giving you extra time to explore and soak in the atmosphere. However, summer can also be very hot with daytime temperatures over 35 degrees.
Autumn (September-November)
Autumn was our personal favorite, we visited in September. The temperatures were perfect, not too hot or cold, the light was amazing for photography, and the town was quiet. The surrounding forests also turn beautiful shades of orange and red, making for a stunning backdrop.
Winter (December-February)
Winter is the quietest season, with fewer visitors and shorter days. The town takes on a serene, peaceful atmosphere and if there’s snow, it feels like a storybook village. It’s colder, so warm clothing is a must, but you’ll get a very authentic and calm experience.
