How to Book

Step-by-step guide on how to book your next trip

Planning and booking a trip can be very exciting and sometimes quite complicated, especially for first-time travelers. It’s easy to lose track of everything, especially when it comes to flights, accommodations and transportation. That’s why we’re providing you with a step-by-step guide on how to best and easily plan and book your trip.

1. Plan your trip

📍 Where to go?

First and foremost, you should consider where you actually want to go. The best way to find inspiration is to use social media like Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, travel blogs, or even a travel agency to find the perfect destination for you.

🗓️ When to go?

Once you’ve decided on a destination, you should consider what time of year you want to travel. Many places are usually more pleasant to visit during the off-season, as it’s sometimes cheaper and less crowded. It’s best to check various platforms beforehand.

✈️ How to go?

Last step is, how you get there. The most popular way to travel is definitely by plane. But there are also good and reliable alternatives, such as buses, trains, camper vans or cars. Especially in Europe, these modes of transport are a great way to get from A to B.

2. Book your flights

Booking a flight is relatively easy these days. You can either book directly with the various airlines or through search engines. Here are some of the best comparison portals you can use to book yours.

Some tips before booking your next flight

  • Flexible flight dates
  • Use VPN’s
  • Look for multi-city routes
  • Book your flights with points or miles
  • Check airports around you
  • Use tools like “Price Alarm”
  • Book well in advance (8-12 weeks)
  • Plan your flight luggage
  • Subscribe to airline newsletters

💡 In general you should book 6 to 8 weeks before departure for short-haul flights and 2 to 6 months before for long-haul flights. You should also book early in the morning or late in the evening. You will also find cheaper flights during the week, rather than on weekends, if you want to save some money.

3. Plan your Route

To plan your route, you should first consider whether you want to go on a road trip or simply stay in one place and explore the region. If you decide to go on a road trip, you should think about these points.

  • Where do you want to start your journey?
  • What time of year do you want to travel?
  • How long do you want to be on the road?
  • How would you like to travel? (car, bus, train, plane, bicycle, on foot)
  • How much is your travel budget?
  • What are your interests? (beaches, cities, nature)

4. Book your rental car or transportation

If you decide to rent a car for your next trip, there are a few things you should definitely consider. First, think about whether you want to rent the car at the airport or at another location. Also, whether the pick-up and drop-off locations should be the same. Once you’ve decided on a provider, you should definitely read the terms and conditions and pay attention to what’s covered and included. We recommend booking without a deductible, but the prices will usually be a bit higher then. It’s also important to check the booking conditions and reviews of the provider.

💡Pay attention to the fuel policy; full/full is the fairest option. You get the car with a full tank and return it the same way.

  • Amount of Deposit
  • Insurance
  • Age of the Driver
  • Payment method (credit card)
  • Tank regulation
  • Place of takeover
  • Trips abroad
  • Free kilometers
  • Cancellation options

If you don’t want to rent a car and prefer to use public transportation, find out in advance which country you’re traveling to and what public transportation options are available there. You should also definitely check whether the country, region, or city in question offers day, weekly, or monthly public transportation passes. In Germany, for example, you can buy the “Deutschland Ticket” and travel throughout the country on regional trains and buses for a month (as of July 2025). To travel through Europe, you can also buy the Interrail Pass, which allows you to explore up to 33 European countries.

5. Book your accomadation

Booking your next hotel can be easy, simple and effective if you keep a few things in mind. First, there’s the question of whether you should book the accommodation early or not… the answer is no, in most cases, you don’t have to. Most of the time, hotel prices don’t really change.

💡Only if you know in advance that there will be a festival, concert, event or other celebrations taking place around the time you’re traveling, you should definitely book early or, if necessary, choose a different destination. Prices are usually quite high then.

When we book our accommodation, we usually look for room upgrades and cashback offers. Booking.com, among other providers, offers Genius and loyalty programs where you can usually get good discounts on rooms, upgrades and free breakfast.

💡if your desired accommodation is fully booked, you should check with the provider or hotel directly to see if there’s any availability for a room. Prices are usually even cheaper if you book directly through the provider.

We generally recommend travel reward programs, but especially for flights and hotels. These programs, offered by airlines, hotel chains, credit card companies, and even rental car, train, and local transport programs, can provide points or miles for each booking. You can then redeem your collected miles or points here and save a lot of money. It’s also a good idea to compare prices between mobile and laptop. On portals like Booking.com, for example, prices are often lower on mobile than on desktop. We also recommend using a VPN, not only to ensure secure internet access (especially if you want to surf abroad and on different networks) but also to get cheaper prices on hotels and flights.

6. Plan and book your Activities

An important part of every trip are activities, excursions, hikes, sightseeing and other exciting adventures. Planning and booking activities has never been easier. You can book your adventures either on-site or in advance. Gather as much information and inspiration about your destination as you can. You can do your own research online, watch YouTube vlogs and videos or find inspiration on social media. Then, it’s best to save the locations and activities on Google Maps.

  • Viator
  • Klook

  • For personal recommendations and insider tips, you should ask locals on-site, even for more flexible activities. If you’re traveling during peak season, we always recommend making reservations in advance, especially for popular activities, restaurants, café’s and attractions.
