Dades Gorge is located in southern Morocco, between the High Atlas Mountains and the edge of the Sahara Desert. It lies along the famous “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs,” stretching between the towns of Boumalne Dades and Tinghir.
This spectacular canyon is part of the wider Dades Valley region and is typically reached by road from Ouarzazate, about a few hours’ drive away. As you approach, the landscape shifts dramatically, from arid desert plateaus to deep red cliffs carved by the Dades River over millions of years.
Getting to Dades Gorge is part of the adventure itself. Most travelers visit it by road as part of a Morocco road trip through the Atlas Mountains, and there are a few common routes depending on where you start.
The most popular route starts in Marrakech and takes around 6-7 hours by car. You’ll drive through the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka pass, passing small Berber villages, mountain landscapes, and eventually reaching Ouarzazate before continuing toward the Dades Valley.
If you’re already in Ouarzazate, the drive is much shorter, around 2.5-3 hours. The road takes you through desert plains and kasbah landscapes before entering the dramatic canyon area.
Many travelers combine Dades Gorge with a Sahara Desert trip from Merzouga. The drive takes about 4-5 hours and follows the famous “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs,” one of the most scenic routes in Morocco.
The route from Fes takes around 7-9 hours by car. You’ll pass through the Middle Atlas Mountains, cedar forests near Ifrane, and wide highland plateaus before descending toward the southern desert landscapes. Many travelers split the journey with an overnight stop in Midelt or Errachidia to make the drive more comfortable and enjoy the changing scenery along the way.

Driving through Dades Gorge is one of those experiences that feels more like a journey through a movie set than a real road. The moment the asphalt starts to twist into the mountains, everything changes, the landscape becomes sharper, quieter, and far more dramatic.
The famous Dades Gorge road is a winding mountain route carved into the red cliffs of the Atlas Mountains. It’s best known for its tight serpentine bends, steep drop-offs, and constant panoramic views over the valley below.
At first, the drive feels calm. But as you climb higher, the road quickly transforms into a series of hairpin turns hugging the cliffside. Every corner reveals a new angle of the canyon, deep rock layers, sudden drops, and the Dades River cutting through the valley floor far below.
We would say no! It can be intense in parts, especially if you’re not used to mountain roads. However, the surface is generally in good condition, and most travelers drive it in a rental car without issues.
The key is simple: take your time. There’s no rush here. Locals share the road with tourists, donkeys, even camels, and the occasional truck, so patience is part of the experience.
For the main Dades Gorge road, a normal rental car is usually more than enough. The road is paved and accessible for most vehicles. However, if you plan to explore smaller mountain tracks or remote valleys nearby, a 4×4 can be helpful.
We explored the gorge with a regular rental car and had no problems at all.
Finding the right place to stay in Dades Gorge can completely shape your experience. This isn’t about big resorts or luxury chains, it’s about waking up to canyon views, quiet mornings, and that feeling of being far away from everything.
The most authentic way to stay in Dades Gorge is in a traditional riad or small boutique guesthouse. These places are often family-run, full of character, and designed to blend into the surrounding landscape.
Many offer rooftop terraces or balconies overlooking the valley, perfect for sunrise and sunset. It’s simple, peaceful, and exactly what makes this region so special.
If there’s one tip we’d give: book a place with a view. The landscape is the highlight here, and waking up surrounded by red cliffs and wide valleys is something you won’t forget.
We stayed at Riad Rihana Dades, and the view over the valley toward Eden Boutique Hotel was honestly one of those quiet travel moments that stays with you. No noise, no crowds, just the canyon and the light slowly changing.
The best time to visit Dades Gorge depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for, but in general, spring and autumn offer the perfect balance of comfortable temperatures and incredible light.
We loved this season! We came in April and generally spring is one of the most beautiful times to explore the gorge. The temperatures are mild, the valley shows hints of green, and the air feels fresh after the winter months. It’s ideal for road trips, short hikes, and long days spent exploring without the intense heat.
Nice to know: It can be relatively cold here, especially in the morning and evening.
Summer can get very hot, especially during the middle of the day. Temperatures often rise above 35°C (95°F), which can make exploring less enjoyable. If you visit in summer, plan your activities early in the morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler.
Autumn is another perfect season, especially for photographers. The light becomes softer and warmer, making the red rock formations glow even more. Temperatures are comfortable, and it’s a great time for driving the famous canyon road without extreme conditions.
Winter brings cooler temperatures and fewer visitors. While days are usually still sunny, mornings and nights can be quite cold, especially in the mountains. Snow is possible in higher areas of the Atlas Mountains, which can make the journey even more dramatic, but also less predictable.

One of the highlights of the area is the iconic winding road high above the gorge. The sharp hairpin bends have become one of the most photographed spots in Morocco and once you see them in person, it’s easy to understand why.
The best views are usually early in the morning or late afternoon when the light makes the red canyon walls glow.
The famous Monkey Fingers are some of the most unique rock formations in the Dades Valley. Shaped by erosion over thousands of years, the rocks almost look like giant stone fingers rising from the earth.
You can explore the area on foot, join a local hiking guide, or simply enjoy the view from nearby riads and viewpoints.
Small Berber villages are scattered throughout the valley, built from earth-toned materials that blend perfectly into the surrounding landscape. Walking through these villages offers a quieter and more authentic side of Morocco far away from the larger tourist cities.

The roads through the gorge are most enjoyable in the morning when temperatures are cooler, fresh air and the light is softer for photos. Sunrise and early morning also mean fewer cars on the winding mountain roads.
Gas stations become less common the deeper you drive into the canyon. It’s best to fill up in larger towns like Boumalne Dades or Ouarzazate.
However, there are now more and more gas stations along the way, even in the more remote areas.
Definitely one of the most important points. The scenery changes around almost every corner. Between the serpentine roads, towering cliffs, and valley viewpoints, this is one of the most photogenic places in Morocco.
Days can be hot, especially in summer, but mornings and evenings are often surprisingly cool due to the mountain location. It can be particularly chilly in the gorge itself, especially in the mornings.
The roads are generally in good condition, but expect sharp curves, steep drop-offs, and occasional animals or local traffic. Rockfalls are also possible in the region, especially on steep cliffs. So always drive carefully and keep your eyes open.
Many travelers rush through Dades Gorge in a single day, but staying overnight gives you the chance to experience the canyon in the quiet evening and early morning hours, when it feels most magical.
